Paul Atreides is INFJ. His relationship with Duncan Idaho is the Introvert's most honest single-trusted-person portrait: the person who has access to a version of the interior that the institutional roles do not provide. Duncan receives what the roles, the Kwisatz Haderach, the Muad'Dib, the Emperor, do not permit. The interior requires one person who sees him rather than the synthesis-designated identity. Duncan is that person across multiple iterations. The Introvert finds the one person and maintains the relationship across every available configuration.
He sees the paths. Not metaphorically, the Ni's capacity for pattern recognition and synthesis has been amplified by the spice into literal prescience, the pattern of what the available pieces imply about what is coming visible before the coming has arrived. He cannot stop seeing the paths. He cannot fully choose between them. The iNtuitive function's most complete expression is also its most imprisoning: the synthesis runs constantly, the paths are always visible, and the seeing does not provide the capacity to choose freely between what is seen. He is trapped in the function's most extreme available form.
His synthesis about the jihad is the Ni's most complete failure mode in the canon: he sees it coming, he sees that he cannot prevent it, and he implements the path that produces it because the synthesis has produced a verdict about which available path costs the most lives and which costs fewer. He is not wrong about the math. He is trapped in the Ni's most honest limitation: the synthesis tells you what the pattern implies is coming, not whether the pattern is the one you would have chosen if the choice were available.
His love for Chani is the Fe's most complete statement across the first book: the specific person, the specific present-tense encounter, the specific quality of what she represents outside the paths and the visions and the Kwisatz Haderach role. She is the one configuration of the present moment that the Ni's synthesis has not fully predetermined. The Fe reads her accurately and the reading produces something the synthesis cannot entirely account for. He chooses the path that preserves her, not instead of the jihad, but in the specific configuration of the specific decision where her survival is a variable he can still influence.
His grief for Leto II is the Fe's most honest statement in the later books: the specific cost of the specific decision, held as specific rather than abstracted into the broader accounting. He is not indifferent to what the path requires of the specific people it requires it of. He carries it. The carrying is the Fe's most complete contribution to a character whose Ni threatens to consume everything else: the specific people remain specific, the specific losses remain losses, and the synthesis that produced them does not convert them into acceptable variables without the Fe noting the cost and refusing to call the notation complete.
He takes the path. This is the J-disposition's most complete statement in the science fiction canon: the synthesis has produced the verdict about which path costs fewer lives, the Te has assessed what taking the path requires of the specific person taking it, and the J-disposition implements from the assessment. He does not take the path gradually or tentatively or with the P-disposition's characteristic openness to what the next present moment might offer as an alternative. He takes it completely, as the J-disposition takes every path it has synthesised as necessary: with the full weight of the framework behind each step.
"I will not lead you down a path of certain destruction." The J-disposition's most honest statement about the framework it has built: it designates what the path requires, it does not designate false certainty about what the path will produce. He takes the path to the jihad because the synthesis has assessed it as the path that costs the fewest lives. The assessment may be wrong. The synthesis may have missed a variable. The J-disposition implements from the synthesis anyway, because the J-disposition's most foundational quality is the capacity to commit to the framework's requirements even when the framework cannot guarantee its own conclusions. He takes the path. The path takes everything else.
