Jane Eyre
Jane Eyre is INFJ. She acts from a moral vision that is entirely her own - developed in the red room at Gateshead, refined at Lowood, clarified across her time at Thornfield - and she will not negotiate it regardless of the cost. Her refusal of Rochester when she learns of Bertha Mason is the INFJ's defining moment: the Ni vision of who she is and what love requires is non-negotiable even when the emotion says otherwise, even when leaving is the most painful choice she has ever made. She does not stay for religious obligation; she leaves for self-respect, which is a different thing. Her return - "Reader, I married him" - is equally INFJ: she comes back when the conditions finally match what she always knew was true.
Jane Eyre and the INFJ Mind
Jane Eyre is INFJ. The type is defined by a hierarchy of cognitive functions - not a checklist of traits but an ordered stack of mental processes that determines how someone perceives the world and how they make decisions. For Jane Eyre, that stack leads with Ni (Introverted Intuition) and is supported by Fe (Extraverted Feeling). Jane Eyre holds two things simultaneously that most people cannot: a long-range vision of how things should be, and a precise sensitivity to how people actually feel right now. Ni (Introverted Intuition) is the dominant function - it works beneath the surface, synthesising observations and patterns into convictions that arrive complete and are difficult to dislodge once formed. Fe (Extraverted Feeling) is the auxiliary - it ensures that the vision is always held in relation to people, not just to abstract principles. The combination produces someone who is both visionary and deeply empathic, often to the point of exhaustion. The inferior Se (Extraverted Sensing) is where Jane Eyre is most vulnerable: the immediate physical and present-tense reality can ambush them in ways the long-range pattern-recognition never modelled.
What makes Jane Eyre a compelling example of INFJ is not that they demonstrate every item on the type description, but that the function stack holds under pressure. Jane Eyre: What the INFJ Profile Explains
Jane Eyre's INFP profile is Brontë's most complete argument that the interior life is sufficient grounds for every external claim a person makes on the world. She is an orphan, penniless, plain, without social position, and she refuses every offer the world makes that would require her to be less than she is internally. The position at Thornfield, the proposal from St John Rivers, the original relationship with Rochester: each requiring a different form of self-abnegation, each refused by the Fi dominant with the same quiet, total precision. She does not argue. She simply does not yield.
"I am no bird; and no net ensnares me: I am a free human being with an independent will." This is the INFP thesis statement: the interior is the freedom, and the interior cannot be given away without giving away the person, and the person will not be given away. The social world has no instrument adequate to extract this from her, because the social world's instruments are all external - wealth, status, approval, threat - and the Fi dominant is located somewhere external instruments cannot reach.
Her return to Rochester - after the inheritance, after Bertha's death, after the fire has taken his sight and his hand - is the INFP who has finally built the external condition that makes the interior expression possible: she returns not from need but from choice, which is the only condition the Fi dominant can accept. The love was always there. The inferior Te had to construct the independent position before the love could be expressed without the expression requiring a self-diminishment the dominant function cannot permit.
Why Jane Eyre Is INFJ, Not INFP or INTJ
Jane is sometimes typed ISTJ - the apparent rule-following, the moral rigidity, the refusal to compromise her standards even under enormous pressure. But ISTJ's Si is dominant: it operates from accumulated precedent. Jane does not follow moral rules because tradition establishes them; she follows them because the Fi dominant has independently confirmed them as correct. Her refusal of Rochester after Bertha's revelation is not Si-based loyalty to the rule against adultery; it is Fi-based recognition that a relationship entered under false pretences would require her to become someone other than who she is. The rule and the value coincide. The type is determined by which one is primary.
The ENFP argument comes from her apparent warmth, the relational richness of her inner life, her generosity toward the people at Lowood and Thornfield. But ENFP's Ne generates possibilities in service of Fi values; its warmth is outward-going and expansive. Jane's warmth is specific and interior: it reaches toward the particular people who have met her on interior ground, and it does not perform itself. The ENFP would have been warmer to more people. Jane is completely warm to the specific people who have access to her interior life.
The clincher is Aunt Reed's deathbed. Jane could have been gracious, could have performed the forgiveness the scene seems to call for, could have given the dying woman the emotional release the moment invites. She cannot do it. The Fi dominant will not produce what it does not actually feel, even at the moment when producing it would be socially merciful and socially expected. She does not have forgiveness yet. She says so. That honesty - the inferior Te incapable of performing what the Fi does not hold - is the INFP at its most complete and most costly.
The INFJ Personality
Visionary and private. INFJs have an unusually clear sense of where things are heading, and quietly orient themselves and others toward it. Their empathy is real but operates from insight, not emotion alone.
