He is the INFP in his most characteristic entry condition: the Fi has designated something as requiring a response, and the inferior Te is building the available instruments as it goes.
His relationship with Starlight is the clearest portrait of the type's relational pattern. He approaches it with full investment, lies to her about his reasons for being there (the bug on her phone), and then cannot live with the lie because the Fi has designated her as real and cannot maintain a deception toward someone it has designated as real. He tells her. The relationship nearly ends. He keeps showing up. The INFP does not manage relationships strategically. It invests in them completely or exits them, and the investment and the exit are both driven by the same function.
His Season 3 use of Temp-V is the type's most honest portrait of what the inferior Te produces when the Fi's frustration about its own inadequacy becomes acute enough. He takes the drug because he cannot stand being the powerless one. He stops taking it because the Fi eventually confirms that becoming powerful through Compound V means becoming part of the thing he is fighting against. The inferior function built the instrument. The dominant function eventually rejected it.

Hughie processes inward. His most important decisions - whether to take the Temp-V, whether to stay with Starlight, whether to trust Butcher - are made in private, before the conversation where he announces them. He does not work things out by talking through them. He comes to conversations with conclusions already formed, and the conversations are where he tests whether the conclusions can survive contact with the other person's response.
His problem-solving is consistently lateral. When Translucent is captured and they cannot figure out how to kill someone with a carbon-composite skin, Hughie works out that the high electrical conductivity of carbon means a specific electrical charge will work. This is Ne making a connection between available information that the more direct thinkers around him had not made. Butcher admits it would have taken him longer to figure it out. Mother's Milk calls him the "Rainman of fucking people over." The intelligence is generative and associative, not accumulated or strategic.
He cannot do things he believes are wrong for long enough to be effective at them. He can do them briefly, under pressure, in the specific moment when the only available options are wrong. He cannot sustain them. The relationship with Starlight starts as a mission - plant a bug on her phone - and he cannot maintain the deception once the Fi has read who she actually is. He tells her the truth. It costs him the relationship temporarily. He tells her anyway because the Fi's designation of her as real is more primary than the mission's requirement that she remain uninformed.
He adapts continuously to what the current situation contains rather than executing a pre-built strategy. His role in The Boys evolves not because he had a plan for developing it but because each situation required something and he found what it required. The Perceiving disposition's most honest self-portrait is his response to the Lamplighter situation: he needs Lamplighter's hand for a security lock, Lamplighter has just burned himself to death, and Hughie - drenched, appalled, operating on no plan - severs the hand with a broken bottle and uses it. No preparation, no strategy, no framework for this. Just the present moment and what it requires.
Why Hughie Campbell Is INFP, Not ISFP or INFJ
Hughie is typed INFJ by some viewers because of his apparent depth and his ability to eventually navigate complex situations with strategic intelligence. The distinction is the Ne: Hughie generates possibilities in the moment - lateral solutions, unexpected approaches - rather than synthesising patterns toward a single convergent conclusion. His tech skills are Ne applied to immediate problems, not Ni building a comprehensive model. He is not reading where things are heading. He is finding the most available angle on the current situation.
ISFP is sometimes argued based on the apparent interiority and the physical directness. The Ne is the distinguishing feature.
