The ESTP reads every room for status cues and acts from the reading at speed, which is why his assault on Starlight in the first episode is simultaneously appalling and completely consistent with who he is: the Se read an opportunity, the Ti confirmed it was available, and the inferior Ni had not modelled what accumulation looks like when the specific action is the kind that defines you.
His exile to Sandusky is the inferior function's most complete available portrait. He is sent away from the only environment he knows how to navigate, the one that provides constant status cues he can read and act from, and placed in a context where the Se has nothing to work with. He requires an audience almost as completely as Homelander does, and for structurally similar reasons: the Se dominant needs the room to read and act from. Without the room, there is no operation. His most consistent misery is the Sandusky exile - not because he has lost his career but because the environment that provides the reading has been removed.
He reads status cues instantly and accurately. He knows where he stands in every room relative to every other person in it. The problem is that knowing where he stands and being unable to tolerate where he stands produce the same impulsive overreactions, because the Ti confirms the move before the inferior Ni has had time to model what the move produces over time.
His decisions are made from assessments of opportunity rather than from values or relationships. The assault on Starlight is the clearest portrait: she was new, she was alone, the Ti confirmed the opportunity was available, and the inferior function provided zero adequate accounting of what the decision would produce for either of them. He regrets it. The regret is the inferior function's accounting, arriving after the Te's implementation.
He is constitutionally unable to plan past the current situation. The dolphin rescue, the Sandusky decisions, the return to The Seven - each is a response to the present-tense configuration without the inferior function's forecast of where the response will accumulate. He is not stupid. He is a very capable present-tense reader who has never had the consequences arrive fast enough to train the inferior function into providing better forecasts before the next situation requires the dominant function's immediate response.
Why The Deep Is ESTP, Not ENTP or ISTP
The Deep is sometimes typed ESFP based on the warmth and the apparent people-orientation. The distinction is the Ti: his relationship to the environment is analytical rather than values-based. He reads status, opportunity, and vulnerability rather than reading what people need. The sea life communication - the actual genuine warmth he shows toward marine creatures - is the inferior function showing its most complete available portrait, not the dominant function at work.
