Frodo Baggins is INFP. He understood what the Ring was before he had the evidence to confirm the understanding. From the moment Gandalf's long explanation was complete, Frodo synthesised the pattern of what carrying the Ring to Mordor required, not just the physical journey but the specific interior cost of carrying an object whose entire purpose is to corrupt the interior of the person carrying it. The Ni reads what the available pattern implies about what is coming before the coming has arrived. He walked into the journey understanding more of what it required than any of the Fellowship had disclosed to him. He understood because the Ni synthesises what the available pattern implies.
His mercy toward Gollum is also iNtuitive: he reads the pattern of what Gollum is, what the Ring has done to the specific person who carried it longest, and synthesises the verdict about what Gollum represents for his own future rather than what Gollum has done in his past. He sees the pattern before it has fully materialised: if Gollum is what the Ring does to the person who carries it, and he is carrying the Ring, then Gollum is the pattern his own future might follow. The mercy is not sentimentality. It is the Ni reading what Gollum is an instance of.
He cannot destroy the Ring at the Crack of Doom. This is the Fi's most honest statement: the specific object the function has been carrying, for the specific duration of the specific journey, at the specific cost to the specific person, has been incorporated into the interior in a way that the voluntary act of its destruction requires a specific quality of interior sovereignty the function no longer has. He claimed it. The claiming is not weakness. It is the Fi's most honest account of what happens to an interior that has been under sustained assault by a force specifically designed to corrupt interiority. The interior failed. The journey was complete. Gollum provided the resolution the interior could not provide. Both are true.
His sailing to the Grey Havens is the Fi's most honest acknowledgment of what the journey produced: the specific interior has been altered in a way that the specific Shire cannot accommodate. The things the Fi designated as primary, the green hills, the parties, the specific community of the specific people he grew up with, are still there. The interior that could inhabit them completely is not. The Fi does not pretend to inhabit fully what it can no longer inhabit fully. He sails west. The leaving is the honest assessment. He could not stay and pretend the interior was intact.
He did not volunteer. He accepted the Ring from Bilbo not from a plan but from the specific present-tense configuration of the specific moment and the specific inheritance and the specific relationship between the Ring's being his and what the being-his required. The Council's decision to take the Ring to Mordor was a completed decision before he offered to carry it. He offered because the present moment produced the offer, not because he had planned to be the Ring-bearer. The P-disposition does not plan the mission. It responds to the present moment that requires someone to take the Ring, and the present moment that requires someone was the Council at Rivendell, and Frodo was in the room.
"I will take the Ring, though I do not know the way." This is the P-disposition's most complete statement: the present moment requires this, the interior has accepted this, the plan does not exist yet and does not need to exist yet. The P-disposition does not require the plan before accepting the requirement. It requires the present moment to make the requirement clear. The requirement was clear at Rivendell. He accepted it. The way revealed itself as the journey proceeded. The P-disposition always finds the way in the doing of the journey rather than in the planning that precedes it.
