Gollum / Smeagol
Gollum is INFP destroyed by an external object that has colonised his inner world. He was Smeagol once - a curious, social creature who loved his grandmother and fished in the river - and the Ring found the INFP's core vulnerability: the interior world. It did not dominate him from outside; it replaced him from within. The debate between Smeagol and Gollum is the INFP's interior conflict made audible: who do I actually want to be versus what I have become? His brief alliance with Frodo is the last flicker of the original person - someone who recognises in Frodo the same quality the Ring is trying to destroy. His role at Mount Doom is the INFP's final contribution: the shadow doing what the person could not, because sometimes the thing that saves everyone is the thing you were unable to let go of.
Gollum / Smeagol and the INFP Mind
Gollum is INFP. The type is defined by a hierarchy of cognitive functions - not a checklist of traits but an ordered stack of mental processes that determines how someone perceives the world and how they make decisions. For Gollum, that stack leads with Fi (Introverted Feeling) and is supported by Ne (Extraverted Intuition). Understanding that order explains not just what Gollum does but why - and why they respond the way they do under pressure, in relationships, and at the turning points of their arc.
Gollum's inner life is the primary reality. Fi (Introverted Feeling) is the dominant function - a deeply personal value system that Gollum uses to evaluate everything, quietly and constantly. It is not visible on the surface, which is why Gollum is often misread as passive or vague: the intensity is entirely internal. What makes Gollum a compelling example of INFP is not that they demonstrate every item on the type description, but that the function stack holds under pressure. In the moments that define their story in Lord of the Rings - the decisions under stress, the failures of judgment, the rare moments of genuine growth - the pattern is consistent. The dominant function is what Gollum reaches for first. The inferior function is what catches them off guard.

Gollum: What the INFP Profile Explains
Gollum was once Smeagol, a hobbit-like creature whose discovery of the Ring led him almost immediately to murder his friend for it, and whose centuries of possession in lightless caves twisted him gradually into the wretched, divided creature the story finds. The long isolation with the Ring stripped away his name, his connections, and finally his coherent self, leaving the obsessive Gollum and the buried Smeagol locked in their endless interior argument.
His brief contact with Frodo offers the only opening his ruined nature has known in an age. Frodo's unexpected kindness stirs the buried Smeagol, and for a moment something like loyalty and the memory of a gentler self flickers back to life, briefly raising the possibility of redemption. The flicker does not survive; the long corruption is too deep, and Gollum's plotting reasserts itself with terrible inevitability.
His end is the perfect tragic fulfillment of his ruin, the moment when his obsession with the Ring carries him, by accident or by the long working of providence, into the fire that destroys both. Gollum's arc is one of the great corruption tragedies in literature, the slow ruin of a feeling, imaginative, originally gentle creature into a divided wretch by the love of a thing that consumed him, redeemed at the last only by the failure of his redemption.
Gollum: INFP Letter by Letter
Gollum lives almost entirely within, in the cave-dwelling solitude of a creature whose long isolation has hollowed him out into a being of obsessive interior life. He talks to himself, debates with himself, and processes everything through the splintered conversations of his own divided inner world, and the rare encounters with others only briefly interrupt the long, lonely interior monologue that is the bulk of his existence. The richest and most ruined reality is inside him.
His whole condition is that of an inward soul gone wrong. Gollum has lived for centuries with no company but his Precious and his own divided self, and the obsessive interior has eaten through whatever outward life he might have had, leaving a being who exists almost wholly in the warped chamber of his own mind. That intensely inward, isolated, internally-tormented depth, the creature who has lived alone with the Ring and himself for too long, is the introversion at his core.
Gollum is haunted by an imaginative obsession with the Ring as symbol, idea, and beloved. He has built around it a whole private mythology of meaning and longing, addressing it with strange tenderness, dreaming of its loss and recovery, investing it with the imagined significance of all his hopes and his identity. He does not relate to the Ring as a thing; he relates to it as a vast, charged symbolic presence in his inner world.
His twisted vision works at the level of obsessive symbol and dream. Gollum's preoccupations, his private names, his rituals of longing, all reflect an imagination that has spent centuries spinning meaning out of his single fixation, and his perception of the world is filtered through that imaginative obsession. That obsessive, symbol-haunted, meaning-spinning imagination, the corrupted dream of a creature who has loved the Ring into a private myth, is the intuition driving his ruin.
Gollum is governed by deep, personal, ruinous feeling. His attachment to the Ring is fundamentally emotional, the love and the longing of a creature for the one thing that has come to mean everything to him, and beneath that corruption the buried Smeagol carries traces of the gentler hobbit-like affection he once possessed, briefly stirred by Frodo's unexpected kindness. The whole tragedy is the tragedy of feeling gone wrong.
His values, however twisted, are personally held and intensely felt. Gollum loves with corrupted but real devotion, suffers loss as personal grief, and responds to kindness with a flicker of remembered moral feeling. The arc of his fall and his brief almost-redemption is the arc of a deeply feeling creature consumed by the corruption of his own attachments. That deeply personal, obsessive, ruinously felt sensibility is the feeling function at the heart of the tragedy.
Gollum is unresolved, open, and divided, an internal conflict between Smeagol and Gollum that never fully settles. He wavers, vacillates, and flips between his selves as the situation pulls one or the other forward, and his whole condition is one of perpetual unfinished oscillation rather than decided resolution. The two voices of him remain in open conflict to the end.
His existence has the wandering, unresolved shape of a soul that never settled. Gollum has drifted through caves, wars, and shadows for centuries, followed his obsession wherever it led without ever closing the inner question of who he is, and meets his end still divided. That open, unresolved, perpetually-vacillating quality, the creature whose two selves never finally arrive at one, is the perceiver beneath the corruption.
Why Gollum Is INFP, Not ISFP or INFJ
The common alternative is ISFP, because Gollum is intensely personal and emotionally driven. But Gollum's obsession lives at the level of symbol and dream, his whole inner world built around the Ring as charged imaginative presence, a private mythology of meaning rather than present sensation. He relates to his Precious as vast symbolic significance, not as physical object. That obsessive, symbol-haunted, meaning-spinning imagination is intuition, which places him in INFP rather than ISFP.
INFJ gets suggested for the depth of his inner life and the symbolic resonance of his story. But Gollum is unresolved and open rather than decided, his internal conflict between Smeagol and Gollum never settling and his entire condition one of perpetual vacillation rather than committed vision. That open, divided, irresolution-embracing quality is the INFP.
