Irene Adler
Irene Adler is ENTJ. She appears in one Sherlock Holmes story, A Scandal in Bohemia, published in 1891, and she is the only person in the canon who beats him. Holmes is hired to recover a photograph she holds over a European king; he runs an elaborate deception to find where it is hidden, and she works out what he is doing, follows him home in disguise to confirm it, and leaves the country before dawn with the photograph and a letter explaining exactly how she did it. He keeps the letter.
Who Is Irene Adler?
Irene Adler appears in a single Arthur Conan Doyle story, A Scandal in Bohemia, first published in the Strand Magazine in 1891, and is referred to briefly afterwards. She is an American opera singer, formerly a contralto at the Imperial Opera of Warsaw, retired and living in London, and she is in possession of a photograph of herself with the King of Bohemia, who is about to marry into a Scandinavian royal house and would very much like it back.
The king has already tried burglary, robbery and interception of her luggage. None of it worked, which is the situation when Holmes is brought in.
Why does Irene Adler matter so much?
Because she wins. Holmes constructs a scheme to make her reveal the photograph's hiding place - a staged disturbance, a smoke alarm, the calculated assumption that a woman will save her most precious possession first - and it works exactly as designed. What he does not anticipate is that she recognises the trick immediately afterwards, dresses as a young man, follows him back to Baker Street and wishes him good night to confirm his identity, and is on a train out of England with the photograph before he arrives to collect it. She leaves behind a letter explaining that she loves someone better and has no intention of using the photograph, and a portrait of herself. Holmes asks the king for the portrait as his fee. Watson notes that Holmes thereafter refers to her as the woman, and that whatever he felt was not love, which is the sentence that has launched a century of adaptations disagreeing with it.

Adler is dominant Te, and the story is a demonstration of it against the best analytical mind in fiction. Presented with a threat, she does not deliberate or seek advice; she assesses the situation, decides what needs to happen, and executes - obtaining the photograph, securing it, defeating three separate attempts to take it, and then, when the game changes, liquidating her position and leaving the country inside a few hours. Every move is operational.
The auxiliary Ni is why she is ahead of him rather than merely quick. She does not simply notice that something is wrong at the fire alarm; she immediately understands what the whole performance was for, who must have staged it, and what he will do next, and she acts on that forecast rather than on the evidence in front of her. Reading Holmes's plan backwards from a single moment is exactly what Te with Ni behind it produces.
Why does she leave the photograph behind?
Because tertiary Se and inferior Fi together produce a decision that is both practical and personal, and Conan Doyle is careful with it. She keeps the photograph as insurance and states plainly that she will never use it, because she has married a man she loves and the leverage is no longer needed. It is not sentiment overriding strategy; it is a strategist who has secured her position and has no interest in destroying someone for its own sake. The disguise itself is the tertiary Se: a physical, immediate, theatrical solution executed with an opera performer's competence.
Irene Adler: ENTJ Letter by Letter
She was a professional performer and moves through the world by acting on it - staging, disguising, travelling, marrying, leaving. Her solution to being investigated is to go out into the street and investigate the investigator.
From one staged incident she reconstructs the entire operation, its author and its next step. She is not reacting to what happened; she is acting on a forecast of what will happen tomorrow morning, and she is correct.
The photograph is an asset and she manages it as one - acquired, defended, retained as insurance and explicitly never to be spent. Her letter to Holmes is an unsentimental account of a completed operation.
Recognition, confirmation, decision and departure inside a single night. She does not leave the matter open or wait to see what he does next; she closes it, permanently, and is out of the country before the other side has moved.
Why Irene Adler Is ENTJ, Not INTJ or ESTJ
ENTP is the most common alternative, and the improvisation and the disguise support it. The difference is closure. An Ne-dominant adversary would generate options and enjoy the contest; Adler identifies the correct move and executes it within hours, then removes herself from the board entirely. There is no play in it - the whole episode is decided, actioned and closed before Holmes has finished congratulating himself.
ENFJ is occasionally suggested because of the charm and the theatrical career. But her handling of the king is coldly transactional and her letter to Holmes is a briefing rather than an appeal. She reads people accurately and uses the reading, which is Te with a very sharp Ni rather than Fe leading.
