Sheryl Sandberg is ENTJ. Who Is Sheryl Sandberg?
Sheryl Kara Sandberg was born on 28 August 1969 in Washington DC and grew up in North Miami Beach. She took a degree in economics at Harvard in 1991, summa cum laude and with the John H. Williams Prize, where Lawrence Summers became her mentor, and an MBA from Harvard Business School in 1995 with highest distinction. Summers took her to the World Bank as a research assistant and then, from 1996 to 2001, she was his chief of staff at the US Treasury.
She joined Google in 2001 to run online sales and advertising, and the number that matters is that she grew the team from four people to four thousand before leaving in 2008. Mark Zuckerberg hired her as Facebook's chief operating officer in March 2008, when the company had enormous usage and essentially no revenue model. It was profitable by 2010. She became its first female board member in 2012.
What is Lean In, and why is it contested?
A book published in 2013 with Nell Scovell, arguing that women should pursue ambition more assertively and that internal barriers - hesitation, self-deprecation, stepping back before it is necessary - compound the external ones. It sold over a million copies and launched a movement. The criticism, which was substantial and came largely from the left, is that it addresses a structural problem as though it were a personal one, and speaks to a small class of professional women while leaving the conditions facing everyone else untouched; one much-quoted line called it an infantilising, reactionary guide for ambitious women. Her husband Dave Goldberg died suddenly on 1 May 2015, and Option B, written with Adam Grant in 2017, is about grief and resilience. Her later years at Facebook were dominated by the company's handling of Russian interference and the Cambridge Analytica scandal, and in January 2025 a Delaware court sanctioned her over deleted emails relating to that litigation. She stepped down as COO in 2022 and left the board in 2024.

Sandberg is dominant Te, and her career is a sequence of the same act performed at increasing scale: arrive at an organisation with an enormous asset and no way to monetise it, and build the machine. Google had search and no sales operation; Facebook had attention and no revenue. In both cases what she supplied was not the product idea but the structure - the hiring, the sales architecture, the targeting business, the operating discipline - and both companies became what they are because somebody did that.
The auxiliary Ni is why the bets were correct rather than merely energetic. Building an advertising business on personal data in 2008 was a read about where value would sit that most of the industry had not made, and she made it early and committed the whole organisation to it.
What is the honest assessment of her record?
That the same faculties produced both halves of it. Te optimises the system it is given toward the objective it is given, and it does not natively generate the question of whether the objective should be pursued. The advertising machine that made Facebook the most profitable company of its kind is the same machine that made Cambridge Analytica possible, and the operational excellence that scaled it is what made the harms scale too. Her tertiary Se is the formidable public performance - the book tour, the boardroom, the testimony - and her inferior Fi is visible in Option B, which is the one thing she has written that is not an argument about how to operate.

Her instrument is organisation: hiring, managing, scaling, testifying, touring a book. She built a four-thousand-person sales operation and then a global advertising business, and none of that work happens alone in a room.
She committed Facebook to targeted advertising when the company had no revenue and the model was unproven at that scale, which was a read on where value would accumulate rather than an extrapolation from anything already working.
The systems she built were optimised relentlessly toward growth and revenue, and the question of what else they were optimising was not one the machinery was designed to ask. The results and the consequences are both products of the same discipline.

Why Sheryl Sandberg Is ENTJ, Not INTJ or ESTJ
INTJ is sometimes suggested because of the strategic scale. But she is an operator rather than a visionary and has never claimed otherwise; her partnerships have always been with a founder who supplies the direction while she supplies the company that can execute it. She works in rooms, through people, at volume.
