Moriarty is the INTJ applied to criminality with the same systematic rigour Sherlock applies to detection. He has built a criminal network that operates according to rules, hierarchies, and contingency plans. His danger is not that he is irrational - it is that he is completely rational and has decided that conventional morality is an inefficiency.
Professor Moriarty and the INTJ Mind
Professor Moriarty is INTJ. The type is defined by a hierarchy of cognitive functions - not a checklist of traits but an ordered stack of mental processes that determines how someone perceives the world and how they make decisions. For Professor Moriarty, that stack leads with Ni (Introverted Intuition) and is supported by Te (Extraverted Thinking). Understanding that order explains not just what Professor Moriarty does but why - and why they respond the way they do under pressure, in relationships, and at the turning points of their arc.
Professor Moriarty operates from a private internal model that most people around them never fully see. The dominant function is Ni (Introverted Intuition) - a pattern-synthesis process that works beneath the surface, assembling observations into long-range convictions that arrive complete rather than argued. Professor Moriarty often knows where something is heading before anyone else does, and acts on that knowledge without needing to explain it, because the Ni process is not easily externalised. Te (Extraverted Thinking) as the auxiliary channels the vision into structure, systems, and decisive action: the model produces a plan, the plan produces results, and the results are evaluated against the model rather than against what anyone else expected. The result is a character who appears certain, independent, and difficult to redirect - because they usually are. The vulnerability is the inferior Se (Extraverted Sensing): Professor Moriarty can be blindsided by present-tense physical realities that the model did not account for, or become dangerously detached from the immediate world while living entirely inside the internal architecture.
What makes Professor Moriarty a compelling example of INTJ is not that they demonstrate every item on the type description, but that the function stack holds under pressure. In the moments that define their story in Sherlock Holmes stories - the decisions under stress, the failures of judgment, the rare moments of genuine growth - the pattern is consistent. The dominant function is what Professor Moriarty reaches for first. The inferior function is what catches them off guard.

Professor Moriarty: What the INTJ Profile Explains
Professor James Moriarty's INTJ profile is Conan Doyle's most precise construction of what Holmes's function stack looks like without the inferior Fe making any claims on the person. Moriarty is Ni-Te without the warmth, without the eccentricity, without the violin and the beekeeper retirement and the Baker Street irregulars. He runs the criminal world as a Te-managed institution from a Ni synthesis that identified, decades before the action begins, that the most efficient available position is the person who organises other criminals rather than committing crimes directly. The model is correct. The implementation is comprehensive. Holmes recognises it as such because the function stacks are the same and the inferiority is what differs.
His relationship with Holmes is the Ni-Te stack's most revealing mirror: each man has identified the other as the one adversary the framework cannot eliminate without consequence. Holmes cannot convict Moriarty - the Te architecture is too clean. Moriarty cannot eliminate Holmes - the Ni synthesis is too accurate. The Reichenbach Falls is the logical conclusion of the deadlock: the only available resolution to two Ni-Te stacks of equivalent quality is mutual destruction, and both accept the logic of that resolution.
"You have less frontal development than I should have expected." It is the INTJ's most characteristic opening move: the immediate analytical assessment, the immediate comparison to the model, the complete absence of social performance around the delivery. He is not trying to intimidate Holmes. He is reporting the data. That is the Ni synthesis running the social interaction as a data-collection exercise, which is the type at its most precise and its most alien.
Why Professor Moriarty Is INTJ, Not INFJ or ENTJ
Moriarty is sometimes typed ENTJ - the institutional management, the comprehensive command structure, the visible authority over the criminal network. But ENTJ builds outward and inhabits the institution. Moriarty constructed the institution and disappeared behind it - he is the invisible centre of a system that runs without his visible presence, which is the INTJ's preferred relationship to institutional power: the architecture is the authority, not the person. ENTJ cannot sustain this level of concealment because the Te dominant needs external expression. Moriarty's concealment is the type signature.
The INTP argument comes from the mathematics professorship, the apparent preference for intellectual engagement over operational management. But INTP builds Ti frameworks and is indifferent to the application unless the application is also interesting. Moriarty built the criminal network because the Ni synthesis determined it was the correct available position and the Te implemented it. The mathematics is the cover and the intellectual parallel to the criminal operation, not the primary orientation. His primary orientation is the framework he built, not the ideas it contains.
The clincher is the conversation in Baker Street. He comes to see Holmes directly - announces his existence, his intent, his assessment of the situation - because the Ni synthesis has determined that Holmes cannot be eliminated through the Te architecture alone. The INTJ who cannot find the instrumental solution approaches the problem directly, through the Ni synthesis: show Holmes that the framework has already accounted for him, and see if the knowledge changes Holmes's calculation. It does not. Moriarty knew it would not. He came anyway, because the INTJ whose model is complete needs to complete the model regardless of whether the completion changes the outcome.
