Mycroft Holmes
Mycroft Holmes is INTJ. Conan Doyle gives Sherlock an older brother with better powers of observation and deduction than his own and absolutely no intention of using them, on the grounds that going out and verifying things is tiresome. He is a founding member of the Diogenes Club, where conversation is forbidden and members are unable to tolerate each other. Sherlock's description of his role in the government is the best line about him: occasionally, he says, Mycroft is the British government.
Who Is Mycroft Holmes?
Mycroft Holmes is Sherlock's elder brother by seven years, appearing in a small number of Conan Doyle stories - most importantly The Greek Interpreter, where Sherlock introduces him, and The Bruce-Partington Plans. Sherlock's assessment is the character's entire premise: that Mycroft possesses greater faculties of observation and deduction than he does, and that if the art of detection began and ended in reasoning from an armchair, his brother would be the greatest criminal agent who ever lived.
He does not, because he cannot be bothered. He has no ambition and no energy, will not go out to verify his own conclusions, and would rather be thought wrong than take the trouble to prove himself right. He is physically large and immobile, and his life runs on a fixed circuit between his lodgings, Whitehall and the Diogenes Club.
What does Mycroft actually do?
He audits the government. His stated function is that of a clearing house: the departments each hold their own information, and Mycroft holds all of it simultaneously, so a minister with a question involving the navy, India, Canada and the bimetallic question can put it to one man and get an answer that nobody else in the country could assemble. Sherlock's summary is that Mycroft occasionally is the British government. The Diogenes Club, which he co-founded, is for the most unsociable men in London: no member may take the least notice of any other, and speaking is forbidden outside the Stranger's Room.

Mycroft is dominant Ni without the auxiliary being made to work for a living, and that is exactly what makes him interesting. He synthesises - takes an enormous quantity of disconnected information and produces the single conclusion it supports - and he does it faster and better than Sherlock. The difference between the brothers is not perception, it is what happens afterwards, and Conan Doyle is making a genuinely sharp point about how much of any achievement is legwork.
The auxiliary Te does exist and it is doing something remarkable: he has built himself a governmental position that requires no movement at all. The clearing-house role is Te designing a system in which the conclusions can be delivered without the deliverer ever leaving a chair, and it is arguably a more efficient use of the same faculties than his brother's.
Why won't Mycroft leave his chair?
Because the inferior Se is close to non-functional and he has arranged his entire life around never needing it. Going out, looking at things, handling objects, being in the physical situation - the whole apparatus of Sherlock's practice is precisely what Mycroft's stack is worst at, and he has built a career in which somebody else does it. The tertiary Fi is visible in the one thing that moves him: he does come out, twice in the canon, and both times it is for his brother.

He co-founded a club where speaking is forbidden, for men who cannot tolerate company. His entire existence runs between three buildings, and Watson is startled to learn Sherlock has a brother at all.
He holds every department's information at once and produces the conclusion that no individual department could reach. The faculty is pure synthesis, and Sherlock concedes it is better than his own.
He would rather be thought wrong than go out and prove himself right, which is an entirely unsentimental assessment of what proof is worth to him. His advice to ministers is impersonal, unhedged and correct.
His life is a closed system: three locations, a fixed schedule, a defined role, no deviation. He has designed an existence in which every question arrives at a chair and leaves it answered.
Why Mycroft Holmes Is INTJ, Not INFJ or ENTJ
INTP is sometimes suggested because of the intellectual detachment and the apparent lack of drive. The difference is what he does with the conclusion. An INTP would keep turning the framework over for its own interest; Mycroft produces a settled answer, delivers it to the government, and considers the matter closed. He is not exploring, he is deciding.
ISTJ is occasionally proposed because of the fixed routine and the institutional role. But his value is synthesis across domains that have no procedural connection - navy, colonies, currency - and the whole point of him is that he sees the pattern nobody has assembled rather than that he remembers the file.
