Steve Bannon
Steve Bannon is ENTP. A former naval officer and Goldman Sachs banker who moved into film production and then into Breitbart, he took over Donald Trump's campaign in August 2016 when it was widely written off, and it won. He was chief strategist in the White House for seven months. He was later convicted of contempt of Congress for refusing to comply with the January 6th committee and served four months in federal prison in 2024, and remains one of the most persistent voices in American right-wing media.
Who Is Steve Bannon?
Stephen Kevin Bannon was born on 27 November 1953 in Norfolk, Virginia, into an Irish Catholic, Democratic, working-class family. He served as a naval officer, took an MBA at Harvard Business School, and worked at Goldman Sachs in mergers and acquisitions before leaving to start his own media-focused investment bank. He then moved into film, producing and directing a series of documentaries with an increasingly explicit political programme.
He joined the board of Breitbart News and became its executive chairman after Andrew Breitbart's death in 2012, and rebuilt it into the most influential outlet on the American nationalist right - describing it, in a much-quoted line, as a platform for the alt-right.
What did Bannon do in the White House?
He took over the Trump campaign as chief executive in August 2016, at a point when most observers considered it finished, and the campaign won. He became chief strategist and senior counsellor in the White House in January 2017, was briefly given a seat on the National Security Council principals committee, and was pushed out in August 2017 after seven months. Since then he has run the War Room podcast and remained a significant organising voice, including in support of the effort to overturn the 2020 election result. He was charged with fraud over the We Build the Wall fundraising campaign and pardoned by Trump before the case was tried. He was convicted of two counts of contempt of Congress for defying a subpoena from the House committee investigating January 6th, and served a four-month federal sentence in 2024.

Bannon is dominant Ne, and it is what makes him consequential rather than merely loud. His actual skill is the reframe: taking a political question everyone is arguing about on established terms and restating it on terms that suit him. Recasting the 2016 election as a referendum on globalism rather than on a candidate's fitness is the clearest instance, and it worked well enough that both parties have been arguing inside his framing ever since.
The auxiliary Ti is why the positions hold together. There is a genuine and internally consistent worldview underneath - about national sovereignty, financial capitalism, elite institutions and civilisational conflict - and he can state it, defend it and follow it into unpopular conclusions. Whether it is correct is a separate question from whether it is coherent, and it is coherent.

Because tertiary Fe is unmanaged and inferior Si supplies no institutional caution at all. He was out of the White House in seven months largely because he could not stop talking to journalists and could not subordinate himself to anyone, and the same pattern recurs across every organisation he has been part of. An Ne-Ti operator generates and provokes; the accumulated discipline required to hold a formal position inside a structure is the function this stack has least of, and his career is a sequence of enormous influence exercised from outside institutions he has been ejected from.
