Pablo Picasso
Pablo Picasso is ENTP. Born in Malaga in 1881 and trained from seven by his painter father, he could do academic realism before he was a teenager and spent the next seventy years refusing to keep doing it. Les Demoiselles d'Avignon in 1907 was so far outside what painting was that Matisse called it a hoax and it was not exhibited publicly until 1916. He then invented Cubism with Braque, abandoned it, went neoclassical, went surrealist, and painted Guernica in 1937. He worked for seventy-six years and died in 1973.
Who Was Pablo Picasso?
Pablo Ruiz Picasso was born on 25 October 1881 in Malaga and died on 8 April 1973 at Mougins in France, aged ninety-one. His mother's account is that his first word was piz, short for lapiz, pencil. His father Jose Ruiz y Blasco, himself a painter, began training him formally in figure drawing and oils at seven, and the family story - probably apocryphal but revealing - is that at thirteen his father saw him finish an unfinished pigeon sketch and vowed never to paint again.
The Blue Period ran from 1901 to 1904, driven by the suicide of his friend Carles Casagemas, and produced La Vie and The Old Guitarist. The Rose Period followed to 1906, warmer, full of circus figures, and coinciding with Fernande Olivier. By 1905 Leo and Gertrude Stein were buying.
What did Picasso actually change?
Les Demoiselles d'Avignon, painted in 1907, is the break. After seeing African objects at the Trocadero ethnographic museum in June that year he repainted the right-hand figures with mask-like faces, and the result was so unassimilable that Matisse dismissed it as a hoax and it stayed unexhibited for nine years. With Georges Braque he then developed Analytic Cubism from 1909, taking objects apart into geometric facets in near-monochrome, and Synthetic Cubism from 1912, pasting wallpaper and newspaper into the picture and inventing collage. Having done that, he left it: the years after the First World War produced neoclassical work that deliberately recalls Ingres and Raphael, and by 1925 Andre Breton was claiming him for the Surrealists. In 1937 he painted Guernica in response to the German bombing of the Basque town during the Spanish Civil War, and refused to explain its symbols, saying it was not the painter's job to define them. He would not allow it back to Spain until liberty and democracy had been established there, which meant it hung in New York until 1981.

Picasso is dominant Ne with the most complete technical foundation any modern painter has had, which is why the reinventions read as choices rather than as an inability to settle. He could paint academically at thirteen. Everything after that is a mind that finds the solved problem uninteresting and keeps asking what else a painting could be - a question he answered differently roughly every decade for seventy years.
The auxiliary Ti is why Cubism is rigorous rather than merely novel. Analytic Cubism is a genuine argument about representation: if a painting is a flat surface, then depicting an object from a single fixed viewpoint is a convention rather than a truth, and the work follows that reasoning to its conclusion. Braque was the ideal partner precisely because the two of them could test the logic against each other, and both later described the period as being roped together like mountaineers.
Why did Picasso keep changing styles?
Because Ne closes nothing and the tertiary Fe kept supplying new material. The stylistic breaks map onto the relationships with almost embarrassing precision - Fernande Olivier, Eva Gouel, Olga Khokhlova, Marie-Therese Walter, Dora Maar - and each new person reorganised the work. Fe in third position is exactly this: an enormous responsiveness to particular people, unregulated, and frequently destructive to them. The inferior Si is the reason he never went back. Where other painters develop a mature style and refine it for thirty years, Picasso treated his own past work as finished business, and the one thing he could not do was repeat himself deliberately.

He worked in company and thrived on it: the Bateau-Lavoir circle, the daily exchange with Braque, the Steins, the dealers, the constant traffic of people through the studio. His output rose with the number of people around him rather than falling.
Every major move is a question about the medium rather than about the subject. What if the object is shown from several viewpoints at once, what if actual newspaper is part of the surface, what if the horror of an air raid is rendered without a single realistic figure.
Cubism was worked out as a system with rules, tested collaboratively and pursued to its logical end. His refusal to explain Guernica is the same instinct: the painting is an argument and the viewer is expected to do the reasoning.
Seventy-six working years and no settled mature style. He kept every option open, abandoned styles he had invented at the point of their success, and left behind an output so large and so various that it is still being catalogued.
Why Pablo Picasso Is ENTP, Not ENFP or INTJ
ESTP is sometimes suggested because of the physical vitality, the appetite and the sheer sensual charge of the work. But an Se-dominant painter works from what is in front of him. Picasso's decisive move was conceptual: Les Demoiselles is not a better observation of a room, it is an argument about what a picture is allowed to do, and the Cubist years are about the idea of representation rather than about looking harder.
