Voltaire
Voltaire is ENTP. François-Marie Arouet took the pen name in 1718, in the Bastille, where he was serving eleven months for satirical verse about the Regent. A beating arranged by an aristocrat he had insulted got him imprisoned again in 1726 and then exiled to England, which turned out to be the making of him. He wrote Candide in 1759, took up the case of a man tortured to death on a false charge and got the verdict overturned, and left over twenty thousand letters.
Who Was Voltaire?
François-Marie Arouet was born on 21 November 1694 in Paris and died there on 30 May 1778, aged eighty-three. He adopted the name Voltaire in 1718, probably an anagram of his surname, while imprisoned in the Bastille from May 1717 to April 1718 for verses mocking the Regent. In 1726, after being beaten by the servants of the Chevalier de Rohan for answering an insult too well in public, he was imprisoned again and then given the option of exile.
The two and a half years in England from 1726 changed his thinking permanently. He published Letters Concerning the English Nation in London in 1733, praising constitutional monarchy, religious tolerance and Newton, and the French edition of 1734 was burned and banned and forced him out of Paris again.
What is Voltaire best known for?
Candide, published in 1759, which demolishes the philosophical optimism of Leibniz by dropping an innocent into every disaster the eighteenth century could supply and having his tutor explain, after each, that this is the best of all possible worlds. It is very short, very funny and still in print everywhere. He also spent sixteen years with the mathematician Émilie du Châtelet at Cirey, studying Newton and running experiments, until her death in 1749. From 1762 he took up the case of Jean Calas, a Protestant merchant tortured to death on the false accusation that he had murdered his son to prevent a conversion, and campaigned until the conviction was overturned in 1765. He wrote over twenty thousand letters; the complete edition runs to 102 volumes. He was denied Christian burial in Paris and was interred secretly at an abbey; in 1791 the National Assembly moved him to the Panthéon.

Voltaire is dominant Ne, and the range is the evidence: verse, tragedy, history, physics, philosophy, satire, journalism and an industrial quantity of correspondence, produced across sixty years with no apparent difficulty in switching between them. He does not develop a system. He generates - an angle, a joke, a reframe, an objection - and the reason he was so dangerous to the authorities is that he could attack the same target from nine directions in a fortnight.
The auxiliary Ti is why the attacks land. Candide is not a rant; it is a demonstration, in which a proposition is stated and then tested against an accumulating pile of counter-evidence until it collapses under its own repetition. His method throughout is to take an official position and follow its logic until it becomes absurd, which requires the logic to be genuinely understood first.
Why did Voltaire take up the Calas case?
Because tertiary Fe supplies real indignation on behalf of actual people, and because a specific case is a far better instrument than an argument. He had been writing about tolerance for decades; the torture and execution of one Protestant merchant on a false charge gave him a fact that could not be answered with a counter-argument, and he spent three years and enormous personal effort on it. The inferior Si is the biographical pattern: no fixed residence, no settled institutional position, exiled repeatedly, and a working life spent moving between countries a step ahead of whoever he had most recently offended.

Twenty thousand letters, filling 102 volumes. He thought by writing at people, maintained a correspondence network across the whole of Europe including several monarchs, and was incapable of holding an opinion privately.
He wrote in every available form and moved between physics, history, theatre and satire without apparent effort. His attacks worked because he could find nine angles on a target while his opponents were still defending the first.
Candide works by taking a philosophical proposition seriously enough to test it to destruction. His campaigning was argued rather than felt, and his objection to intolerance was consistently framed as a demonstration of its incoherence.
No settled home, no institution, no system. He was exiled from Paris repeatedly, lived in England, Cirey, Potsdam and Ferney, and produced an enormous body of work without ever closing it into anything resembling a philosophy.
Why Voltaire Is ENTP, Not ENFP or INTJ
ENFP is occasionally suggested because of the campaigning and the moral energy of the later years. The difference is the auxiliary. Ne with Fi campaigns from a settled personal value; Voltaire's method is analytical demolition, and even the Calas campaign was pursued as an argument about judicial procedure and religious privilege rather than as an expression of feeling.
ENTJ is sometimes proposed because of the sheer output and the influence. But he built nothing and led nothing. He wrote, provoked, corresponded and moved on, and his power was entirely that of a man with a pen and no institution to defend.
