Long John Silver
Long John Silver is ENTP. Robert Louis Stevenson put him in Treasure Island in 1883 as the ship's cook, one-legged, with a parrot on his shoulder named after his old captain, and in doing so invented most of what people now picture when they hear the word pirate. He is the most dangerous man on the Hispaniola and the most likeable, and he switches sides roughly whenever the arithmetic changes. Stevenson's real trick is that Jim Hawkins keeps liking him anyway, and so does the reader.
Who Is Long John Silver?
Long John Silver is the antagonist of Treasure Island, published by Robert Louis Stevenson in 1883. He signs on as chief cook aboard the Hispaniola, having previously served as quartermaster under the pirate captain Flint, and he is recruited by people who have no idea what they are hiring. His left leg is gone at the hip and he moves on a crutch with a speed that unsettles everyone who watches it. On his shoulder sits a parrot he has named Captain Flint, which shouts pieces of eight and stand by to go about, and which he deploys quite deliberately as a piece of theatre.
His relationship with the boy narrator, Jim Hawkins, is the engine of the book. Silver tells him stories of the buccaneering life, wins his trust completely, and is in the middle of organising a mutiny the entire time. When the mutiny comes, Jim's affection for him does not simply evaporate, and that refusal to resolve is what makes the character work.
Why is Long John Silver so important?
Because he is the source of the modern pirate. The peg leg, the crutch, the shoulder parrot, the mixture of menace and charm - almost every pirate in popular culture since, from Captain Jack Sparrow backwards, is downstream of this one character. He is also, unusually for a Victorian villain, allowed real virtues: he is financially prudent where the other pirates are not, genuinely brave despite the disability, and by some distance the most intelligent person in the book. He shifts allegiance repeatedly, always toward whichever side is currently winning, and the novel lets him get away with it.

Silver's dominant Ne is what makes him lethal in a way the other pirates are not. Israel Hands and the rest have one plan and follow it. Silver has an option ready for every configuration the situation might take, and he switches between them without visible strain because he never committed to any single one. He is loyal to the squire's party right up to the moment that stops being the better bet, and the change costs him nothing internally because he was always holding both.
The auxiliary Ti is why the improvisation is not chaos. He is the only man aboard who has thought through the actual arithmetic of piracy: what a share is worth, what happens to men who spend it, why Flint's crew ended where they did. His famous speech about pirates who die poor is a genuine analysis, and it is correct, and it is delivered to a fourteen-year-old boy in a way that also happens to serve his position.
Why does Jim Hawkins still like Long John Silver?
Tertiary Fe, running at high skill and low conscience. Silver reads people with total accuracy and gives them precisely what they respond to - the squire gets deference, the crew gets brotherhood, Jim gets attention and stories from a man who takes him seriously. None of it is exactly false, which is what makes it so effective. He does appear to be fond of Jim, and he also has him earmarked as leverage, and Stevenson never lets us separate the two. The inferior Si is the only place he is weak: he has no real capacity to learn from what happened to Flint's crew as a pattern that might include him, which is why he ends the novel with a sack of coins and no plan beyond the next port.
Long John Silver: ENTP Letter by Letter
He works the ship constantly. Every scene has him in conversation, telling a story, building a rapport, holding a room, and his power derives entirely from access to people. A Silver locked in a cabin would be harmless.
He is never operating on the present arrangement alone. Throughout the voyage he is holding several possible outcomes in mind at once and keeping his position viable in all of them, which is why the mutiny catches everyone else off balance and never quite catches him.
His view of loyalty is frankly economic and he says so. The speech about pirates who spend everything and die poor is a piece of clear-eyed reasoning about incentives, and he has organised his own affairs, including a bank account and a wife, accordingly.
He commits to nothing until he has to. The whole character is a study in keeping options open for as long as possible, and his survival at the end of the novel is a direct consequence of never having closed off a route out.
Why Long John Silver Is ENTP, Not ENFP or INTJ
ESTP is the standard alternative, and the physical courage and opportunism support it. The distinction is what he manipulates. An Se-dominant pirate reads the immediate situation for tactical advantage in the moment. Silver operates on possible futures - he is managing three separate versions of how the voyage might end, and positioning himself to be on the right side of whichever one arrives. That is anticipation of alternatives, not exploitation of the present.
ENFJ is occasionally suggested because his charm is so effective and his reading of people so exact. But an Fe-dominant character is genuinely oriented toward the group and destabilised by losing it. Silver discards men the instant they stop being useful, including men who trusted him completely, and never appears to feel it. The warmth is a tool wielded by a mind that has already run the numbers, which puts Fe third.
