Joseph Stalin
Joseph Stalin is INTJ. Born Ioseb Jughashvili in Gori in 1878 and educated for the priesthood at the Tiflis seminary, he organised strikes, ran the 1907 Tiflis bank robbery that killed around forty people, and was exiled to Siberia repeatedly. He took the post of General Secretary in April 1922, which nobody else wanted, and turned an administrative job into absolute power by controlling appointments. The famine of 1932-33, the purge that executed at least 700,000 people between 1934 and 1939, and the war that followed all proceed from decisions he made alone.
Who Was Joseph Stalin?
Joseph Stalin was born Ioseb Besarionis dze Jughashvili on 18 December 1878 in Gori, Georgia. He entered the Tiflis Theological Seminary in 1894 to train as an Orthodox priest and abandoned it around 1899, having found Marxism. Between 1899 and 1912 he was a working revolutionary: co-organising two strikes at the Rothschild refinery, orchestrating the Tiflis bank robbery of June 1907 in which around forty people were killed, and being arrested and exiled to Siberia several times over.
He joined the Bolshevik Central Committee in January 1912 and became People's Commissar for Nationalities after the October Revolution. In April 1922 he was made General Secretary, a post regarded at the time as clerical drudgery, and it is the hinge of the entire twentieth century: the job controlled appointments, and over several years he filled the party apparatus with people who owed their position to him, which is how Trotsky - the more brilliant, more famous man - was outmanoeuvred and destroyed.
What did Stalin do in power?
From 1928 the Five-Year Plans forced through collectivisation and industrialisation, and the disruption to food production contributed to the famine of 1932-33. Between 1934 and 1939 the Great Purge imprisoned more than a million people and executed at least 700,000, including most of the original Bolshevik leadership and much of the Red Army's officer corps. He signed the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact with Nazi Germany in 1939 and was invaded by it in 1941; Soviet forces took Berlin in 1945. He died on 5 March 1953, aged seventy-four.

Stalin is dominant Ni pointed at a single question - who will hold power, and through what mechanism - and it is the reason a man everyone underestimated destroyed everyone who underestimated him. Trotsky had the theory, the oratory and the reputation. Stalin had a model of where authority in the new state would actually accumulate, and he read it correctly years before anyone else understood that the Secretariat was the answer.
The auxiliary Te is the apparatus. He did not seize power; he assembled it, appointment by appointment, over a decade, and the machine he built kept functioning through the purges, the famine and the war. Everything characteristic of his rule is Te implementation on an enormous scale: the plans, the quotas, the files, the bureaucratic paperwork of terror.
Why was Stalin so consistently underestimated?
Because dominant Ni works privately and Te here was pointed at process rather than performance. Contemporaries saw a dull provincial administrator with a heavy accent and no gift for speaking, and they were assessing the wrong faculty entirely. His tertiary Fi is where the pathology sits: an INTJ's feeling function is private, absolute and unexaminable from inside, and in Stalin it took the form of a paranoia that could not be argued with, because the conviction did not arrive by argument. He was a poor public speaker in a movement full of orators, and made that an advantage. His work was done in offices, in correspondence and in appointments, and he was consistently dismissed by rivals who mistook the absence of performance for the absence of ambition.
He identified where power would come to rest in a state that did not yet exist, and took the unglamorous post that controlled it. Everything he did afterwards followed from a conclusion drawn long before the evidence for it was visible to anyone else.
Human beings appear in his decisions as quantities. Collectivisation, the quotas, the execution lists processed as administrative documents - the reasoning is instrumental throughout, and the absence of any counterweight is what made the scale of it possible.
Everything was structure: five-year plans with numeric targets, a party apparatus with a defined hierarchy, a security service with quotas. He did not improvise power, he institutionalised it, and the institution outlasted him by nearly forty years.
Why Joseph Stalin Is INTJ, Not INFJ or ENTJ
ISTJ is sometimes argued, and the bureaucratic method and appetite for procedure make it plausible on the surface. But Si works from precedent, and Stalin's programme was the deliberate destruction of every precedent in Russian society - the peasantry, the church, the party's own founders. He was not conserving an order, he was imposing one that did not exist, on the basis of a conclusion about where history had to go.
ENTJ comes up because of the scale of what he built. The difference is visibility. An ENTJ commands in public and leads from the front. Stalin's power was accumulated quietly, through files and appointments, by a man who avoided the platform and let more charismatic rivals exhaust themselves on it. The vision came first, privately, and the machine was assembled to serve it.
