Mikhail Gorbachev
Mikhail Gorbachev is INFJ. He became General Secretary in March 1985 at fifty-four, the first Soviet leader born after the revolution, and introduced glasnost and perestroika into a system that had no capacity to absorb either. In 1989 the Eastern bloc went, and the decisive thing he did was nothing: he declined to send the tanks. He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1990, was held at his dacha during the August 1991 coup, and resigned on 25 December 1991 as the country he led ceased to exist.
Who Was Mikhail Gorbachev?
Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev was born on 2 March 1931 in Privolnoye in the Stavropol region, to a peasant family - both his grandfathers were arrested under Stalin - and died on 30 August 2022, aged ninety-one. He studied law at Moscow State University, rose through the party in Stavropol, and became General Secretary on 11 March 1985, the first Soviet leader born after the 1917 revolution.
He arrived with two words that reorganised the decade. Glasnost meant openness: press freedom, public criticism, the admission that things were wrong. Perestroika meant restructuring: economic reform intended to make a centrally planned system function. The Chernobyl disaster in April 1986, and the official reflex to conceal it, hardened his conviction that the secrecy itself was the disease.
What did Gorbachev actually decide?
The most consequential thing he did was a refusal. Through 1989, as Poland, Hungary, East Germany, Czechoslovakia and Romania went one after another, the Soviet Union did not intervene - and every one of those governments had assumed, on fifty years of precedent, that it would. The Berlin Wall came down on 9 November 1989 without a shot fired by a Soviet soldier. He signed the INF Treaty with Reagan in December 1987, eliminating an entire class of nuclear weapon, and took the Nobel Peace Prize in 1990. In August 1991 hardliners in his own government detained him at his dacha in Foros and attempted a coup; it collapsed in three days, and so did his authority. He resigned on 25 December 1991 and the Soviet Union dissolved the next day. He remains widely admired abroad and, in Russia, widely blamed.

Gorbachev is dominant Ni, and the tragedy is that the perception was accurate and the consequence was not the one he foresaw. He could see, earlier and more clearly than anyone in the Politburo, that the system was failing structurally rather than temporarily, and that no amount of administrative tightening would fix it. What he could not see was that the reforms would not stabilise the thing he was trying to save. He was attempting to renew socialism; he ended it.
The auxiliary Fe is why the reforms took the shape they did, and why the world responded to him as it did. His instrument was persuasion and relationship - with Reagan, with Thatcher, with his own public, with the East European leaderships - and he genuinely believed that a political order could be renegotiated through openness rather than enforced. That belief is the reason the Wall came down without violence, and it is the same belief that left him without an answer when the hardliners moved.
Why is Gorbachev disliked in Russia?
Because Fe values are not a substitute for tertiary Ti's structural planning, and the reforms arrived without a design for what would hold things up in the interim. The economy contracted, the state dissolved, and a great many people experienced the 1990s as a catastrophe that began with him. The inferior Se is the specific failure: a leader operating on a long-range vision was repeatedly slow to read the immediate physical situation in front of him, and the August coup - organised by men he had personally appointed - is the extreme case of that.

He arrived at his diagnosis of the system privately, over years, while rising through an apparatus in which saying it aloud would have ended his career. The conclusions were formed alone and revealed only once he had the authority to act.
He saw a structural failure where his colleagues saw a bad decade, and acted on a picture of the future that nobody around him shared. He was right about the diagnosis and wrong about where the treatment led.
His method was relationship and persuasion, and his defining act was declining to use force when every precedent said he would. Eastern Europe changed governments in 1989 without Soviet tanks because of a decision one man took about what he was willing to do to people.
He committed completely and did not reverse. Glasnost, perestroika, the arms treaties and the refusal to intervene were all decisions taken and held under enormous pressure from within his own government, right up to the point where that government tried to remove him.
Why Mikhail Gorbachev Is INFJ, Not INFP or INTJ
ENFJ is the most common alternative, given the personal warmth and the extraordinary international rapport. The difference is where the direction came from. He arrived with a conviction formed privately over years about what was structurally wrong, and the persuasion was deployed in service of it. His domestic manner was also markedly less comfortable than his diplomatic one, which is not what an Fe-dominant leader produces.
INTJ is occasionally suggested because of the long analysis of the system's failure. But an Ni-Te reformer would have built the enforcement apparatus first. Gorbachev's method was to open the conversation and trust that the argument would carry, which is Fe in second position and the reason the whole thing got away from him.
