Bruce Frederick Joseph Springsteen was born on 23 September 1949 at Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch, New Jersey, and grew up Catholic in Freehold. His father Douglas, a World War II veteran who drove a bus, lived with mental health problems that worsened as he aged, and the relationship between them is the subject that Springsteen has returned to more than any other across fifty years of writing.
He assembled the E Street Band in October 1972, though the name was not used until September 1974. Born to Run arrived in August 1975 and made him famous internationally almost overnight; that October he appeared on the covers of Newsweek and Time in the same week, the first artist ever to do it. A legal dispute with his manager then kept him out of a studio for the best part of a year, settled in May 1977, and Darkness on the Edge of Town followed in June 1978.
Why is Nebraska such an unusual record?
Because he released the demos. In September 1982 he put out an album of songs he had recorded alone at home on a cassette four-track, intending to re-record them properly with the band, and concluded that the re-recordings had lost whatever the originals had. It is stark, unaccompanied and about murderers and desperate people, and it came out two years before Born in the U.S.A., which sold thirty million copies, produced seven top-ten singles and was misread as patriotic by more or less everyone including politicians who tried to use it. His live shows became famous for their length - the longest, in Helsinki on 31 July 2012, ran four hours and six minutes across thirty-three songs. Between 2017 and 2021 he performed Springsteen on Broadway, telling the stories from his 2016 memoir. He holds twenty Grammys, two Golden Globes, an Academy Award, a special Tony, the Kennedy Center Honors from 2009 and the Presidential Medal of Freedom from 2016.

Why did Springsteen release Nebraska instead of re-recording it?
Because tertiary Ti made the judgement and the judgement was correct. He compared the band versions against the cassette and concluded the arrangements were destroying the thing that made the songs work, which is a technical assessment made against his own commercial interest at the peak of his career. The inferior Se is the part he has been most open about: a man who has described a long history of depression and who has consistently found the physical present harder to inhabit than the imagined one, which is why the stage - three or four hours of unbroken physical exertion - has functioned for fifty years as the one place the interior world and the body are doing the same thing.
