Richard Nixon
Richard Nixon is INTJ. He lost the presidency in 1960 by a hair, lost the California governorship in 1962 and told reporters they would not have him to kick around any more, and then won the White House in 1968 anyway. He went to China in February 1972, signed the first strategic arms limitation treaty with Moscow, created the Environmental Protection Agency and ended the draft. He also taped himself, and on 9 August 1974 became the only American president to resign.
Who Was Richard Nixon?
Richard Milhous Nixon was born on 9 January 1913 in Yorba Linda, California, into a family with no money, and died on 22 April 1994. He served in the Navy in the Pacific, was elected to Congress in 1946, made his name on the Alger Hiss case, reached the Senate in 1950 and was Eisenhower's vice president from 1953 to 1961.
Then he lost twice in a row: the 1960 presidential election to John F. Kennedy by one of the narrowest margins on record, and the 1962 California governorship, after which he told the press that this was his last conference and they would not have Nixon to kick around any more. It was widely taken as the end of his career. He was elected president six years later, and re-elected in 1972 carrying forty-nine of fifty states.
What did Nixon achieve, and what ended him?
Both halves belong on the same page. He went to Beijing in February 1972 and reopened relations with China after twenty-three years of nothing, which realigned the Cold War and which almost nobody else could have done politically because his anti-communist record was unassailable. He signed SALT I with the Soviet Union the same year. Domestically he established the Environmental Protection Agency in 1970, signed the Clean Air Act, ended the draft, and desegregated southern schools faster than his predecessors. On 17 June 1972 five men were arrested breaking into the Democratic National Committee offices at the Watergate complex, and the two years that followed were about the cover-up rather than the burglary. He had installed a taping system in the Oval Office, and it recorded him. He resigned on 9 August 1974, the only president ever to do so, and was pardoned by Gerald Ford a month later.

Nixon is dominant Ni, and China is the demonstration. The opening required seeing, years ahead of the establishment, that the Sino-Soviet split had made a realignment possible and that he was uniquely positioned to execute it precisely because he had spent twenty years as the most credible anti-communist in America. That is a long-range synthesis about a configuration nobody else had assembled, acted on in total secrecy, with Kissinger's back channel running for months before anyone knew.
The auxiliary Te is the machinery: an administration run through a tightly controlled staff system, a foreign policy conducted around the State Department rather than through it, and a domestic legislative record that is considerably larger than his reputation allows. He built structures and used them.
Why did Watergate destroy him?
Because the tertiary Fi in an INTJ produces grievances that are private, permanent and immune to argument, and Nixon's were the organising fact of his personality. He believed the eastern establishment, the press and the Kennedys had always despised him, and the belief was not entirely wrong, which made it impossible to dislodge. The enemies list, the surveillance and the cover-up all proceed from it. The inferior Se is the detail that finished him: he installed a recording system and then behaved in front of it exactly as he behaved everywhere else, apparently unable to hold in mind that the tape was physically running.

He was an intensely private man in the most public job available, uncomfortable with people, given to long solitary stretches with a yellow pad, and his most consequential foreign policy was conducted through a secret back channel rather than in any room he had to stand in.
He saw that the Sino-Soviet split made an opening to China possible, and that his own record made him the one person able to take it. The whole manoeuvre existed in his head years before it existed anywhere else.
He conducted foreign policy as a cold structural exercise in leverage and balance, and treated domestic politics the same way, including the parts that became criminal. The reasoning was instrumental throughout and it did not stop at the law.
He built institutions, closed treaties and executed long campaigns to completion, including a comeback from two defeats that everyone had treated as terminal. The same closing instinct is what turned a third-rate burglary into a two-year operation to contain it.
Why Richard Nixon Is INTJ, Not INFJ or ENTJ
ENTJ is the most common alternative, given the campaigning career and the scale of the presidency. But he was a famously awkward public man who disliked people, avoided contact where possible, and did his real work in memos, back channels and small rooms. The politics were something he endured to reach the position where he could think.
ISTJ is occasionally suggested because of the discipline and the resentment of elites. The difference is that his defining achievements were unprecedented rather than procedural - a realignment with China, an arms treaty, a new federal agency - each justified by a forecast rather than by precedent.
