Michelangelo
Michelangelo is INTJ. He carved the Pietà at twenty-three and signed it across the Virgin's sash, the only work he ever signed, reportedly after hearing someone credit it to another sculptor. He took a block of marble that two sculptors had abandoned as ruined and produced the David from it. He then spent four years on his back-breaking scaffolding under the Sistine ceiling insisting he was not a painter, and at seventy-one took over the building of St Peter's and refused a salary for it.
Who Was Michelangelo?
Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni was born on 6 March 1475 at Caprese in Tuscany and died in Rome on 18 February 1564, aged eighty-eight. He trained briefly with Ghirlandaio and then in the Medici household in Florence, where he had access to a collection of antique sculpture that shaped everything afterwards.
The Pietà, carved between 1498 and 1499 when he was in his early twenties, is the only work he ever signed - the story is that he overheard visitors attributing it to a rival and returned at night to cut his name across the band on the Virgin's chest. The David followed between 1501 and 1504, and its origin matters: the block had been quarried decades earlier, worked on and abandoned by at least two sculptors, and left exposed in a cathedral yard as unusable. He looked at a spoiled piece of marble and saw the figure that was in it.
Did Michelangelo want to paint the Sistine Chapel?
No, and he said so continuously for four years. He regarded himself as a sculptor - the word he used of his own trade - and considered the ceiling commission of 1508 a distraction pressed on him by Julius II, possibly at the instigation of rivals who expected him to fail at it. He painted it standing, craning upward on scaffolding of his own design, and the surviving complaint in verse about his beard pointing at heaven and his brush dripping into his face is his own. He returned decades later for the Last Judgment on the altar wall between 1536 and 1541. From 1546, at seventy-one, he took charge of the construction of St Peter's Basilica and designed its dome, and he refused payment for the work, treating it as an obligation to God rather than a commission.

Michelangelo is dominant Ni, and his own account of sculpture is a description of the function. He said the figure was already inside the block and that his job was the removal of what was surplus - which is not a mystical claim so much as an accurate report of how the perception arrived. The David is the proof: the constraint was a damaged block with a specific existing shape, and where two sculptors saw ruined stone he saw the one figure that could still be got out of it.
The auxiliary Te is the astonishing quantity of finished work. Ni supplies the conception and Te builds it, and in his case that meant quarrying expeditions, contracts, workshops, scaffolding engineered from scratch, and the management of the largest building project in Christendom in his seventies. He was not a dreamer who occasionally produced objects; he was an operator who delivered at architectural scale for sixty years.
Why was Michelangelo so difficult?
Because tertiary Fi is absolute and unexplained, and his was attached to the work rather than to any person. He fought with popes, abandoned commissions, feuded with Bramante and Raphael, and signed the Pietà out of what appears to have been simple fury at a misattribution. The inferior Se is the other half of the record: he worked to the point of physical ruin, ate badly, slept in his clothes and boots, and by his own and others' accounts treated his body as an obstacle rather than as something that required maintenance.

He worked alone by preference in a period when large workshops were the norm, kept his methods to himself, and burned drawings late in life so that nobody would see the effort behind the results.
He described the sculpture as already present in the stone and his work as removal. The David came out of a block two other sculptors had written off, which is what it looks like when someone perceives the finished thing before beginning.
He argued with popes, walked off commissions, and organised quarries, workshops and building sites with real command. The decisions about what a work required were made on the work's terms and defended against anyone, including his patrons.
Sixty years of completed monumental work, ending with a basilica dome begun in his seventies. He closed things at a scale that required decades of sustained execution, and he was still directing St Peter's in the week he died.
Why Michelangelo Is INTJ, Not INFJ or ENTJ
ISTP is sometimes suggested because of the physical craft and the solitary working method. The difference is that he was not responding to the material. He arrived with the figure already determined and removed everything that was not it, and his frustration with the marble was frustration with an obstacle rather than a dialogue with it.
INFP is occasionally proposed because of the poetry, the Neoplatonism and the intensity of feeling. But his output is systematic and enormous and his working life was organised around delivering monumental commissions on contract. The values are private and they sit third, behind a conception and the machinery to realise it.
