His relationship with Neal Cassady is the inferior Si's most complete expression: the specific person who provided the present-tense energy that the INFP's dominant function required as the fuel for the Ne's most complete available generation. Cassady was the inferior function's most complete external instrument: he inhabited the present moment with a completeness that the INFP's interior-oriented dominant function found both necessary and impossible to sustain independently. Cassady generated the road. Kerouac wrote it. Both things were required for On the Road to exist.
His alcoholism and death are the inferior Te's most complete failure: the type that could write the most complete available expression of what the American interior contains could not build the structure required to protect the person writing it. The form requires the interior to be fully available. The inferior function cannot build the container that makes the full availability sustainable across time. He wrote for ten years at maximum output. The container failed. The output was complete.
Why Jack Kerouac Is ENFP, Not ENTP or INFP
Kerouac is sometimes typed ENFP - the warmth, the apparent Ne-quality of the spontaneous generation, the relational richness of the road trips. But ENFP generates from the outside in - the Ne is expansive and energised by the social world's responsiveness. Kerouac generates from the inside out: the Fi has the assessment of what the American road contains and the Ne finds the form. He is depleted by the social world's responsiveness to On the Road - the fame, the demand for performance - in the way the ENFP would be energised by it. The depletion is INFP.
The ESFP argument comes from the physical expressiveness, the present-tense quality of the prose, the road itself as the primary subject. But ESFP inhabits the present completely, without the Ne generating the alternative framing of the present. Kerouac is always also writing the present: every road moment is simultaneously the Se's inhabited present and the Ne's generation of the framing that makes the present legible as what the Fi has been trying to express. That dual inhabitation - present and writing-the-present simultaneously - is INFP.
The clincher is the scroll. He taped sheets of paper together to produce a 120-foot scroll so the typing would not be interrupted by the need to change pages. The inferior Te's most complete available management structure was removed from the path between the interior and the output. The Fi spoke. The Ne generated. The Te built only the scroll. What the interior contained without the inferior function's interference: that is On the Road, and it is the INFP's most honest available self-portrait.
