His alcoholism is the inferior Si's most complete previous expression: the accumulated specific weight of failure - the broken arm, the job lost, the wife's fear, the son's damage - converted into the one substance that the inferior function found adequate to suppress the dominant function's perpetual generation of better alternatives. He stops drinking. The hotel gives the Ne a different instrument. The Ne generates without the Si's accumulated weight of evidence about what generation without grounding produces.
"All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy." The sentence generates itself, fills the pages, fulfills the Ne's constitutive requirement of production - something is being made, the function is running, the hotel is providing the context - while the inferior Si produces nothing, builds nothing, accumulates nothing that would connect the generation to any purpose the Fi had actually endorsed. The novel writes itself. The family is in the Overlook. The Ne cannot stop. That is the type, at its most complete and its most complete horror.
Why Jack Torrance Is ENFP, Not ENTP or INFP
Jack is sometimes typed INTJ - the apparent private planning, the comprehensive model of what the Overlook requires. But INTJ builds a Ni synthesis and implements it with Te. Jack is generating in real time, without a synthesis, producing the pages as the Ne produces them, which is the ENFP's most honest relationship to creative work. He does not know what the novel is. He is making it as the hotel provides the conditions for making. That real-time generation without prior synthesis is Ne, not Ni.
The ESTP argument comes from his physical menace, the apparent present-tense quality of his violence. But ESTP is Se dominant: it reads the room. Jack cannot read the room because the Ne has replaced the present-tense reality with the hotel's generated alternative. His violence is the Ne-generated narrative finally overriding the inferior Si's remaining anchor to the actual family in the actual hotel. He is not responding to what is present. He is inhabiting what the hotel's Ne is generating for him.
The clincher is "Heeeere's Johnny!" It is the most Ne-generated possible sentence in the situation: the function found the angle - the television reference, the irony, the performance - and produced it at the exact moment the inferior function has been completely overwhelmed. He is performing the Ne's generation for an audience of one. That performative, generative, audience-seeking quality is the ENFP at its most honest and its most horrifying.
