Who Is Yennefer of Vengerberg?
Yennefer is a sorceress in Andrzej Sapkowski's Witcher novels, the CD Projekt Red games and the Netflix adaptation. She was born with a curvature of the spine and is a quarter-elf, in a world where both facts mark a person out, and her early life is written as unrelieved: a father who beat her, a mother who did not intervene, and an attempted suicide before she was sold to the magical academy at Aretuza.
The price is the detail that defines her. Tissaia de Vries bought her from her stepfather for four marks. Sapkowski's point is not subtle and does not need to be.
What did Yennefer give up?
At Aretuza she underwent the transformation that sorceresses submit to - a process that rebuilds the body into the conventional beauty the profession requires, and which leaves the practitioner sterile. She emerged extraordinarily powerful and extraordinarily beautiful and unable to have children, and the pursuit of a reversal is the through-line of her entire arc across novels, games and adaptation. Her relationship with Geralt of Rivia begins with a djinn - his last wish binds their fates together, and neither of them can subsequently establish how much of what they feel is theirs, which is a genuinely interesting problem to give two characters. She becomes, with Geralt, the adoptive mother of Ciri, and the found family is where the arc actually resolves.
