Shinji Ikari
Shinji Ikari is INFP under conditions of total collapse. He has an extraordinarily rich interior life and almost no capacity to translate it into action, because the people around him have never given him a model for how to do that safely. His recurring paralysis is not cowardice but the INFP's deepest wound made structural: he cannot act without knowing it is right, and the world he is in never lets him know.

Shinji Ikari's INFP profile is Evangelion's most complete construction: a person for whom the interior life is so primary that the exterior world - including the apocalypse, the Angels, the fate of humanity - is experienced primarily as pressure on the interior rather than as a set of external facts requiring response. He pilots the Eva not from courage or conviction but from a series of Fi-driven responses to specific people and specific moments: he cannot let Rei be hurt again, he cannot let Asuka die in front of him, he cannot endure the specific feeling of having chosen inaction and watched the consequence. The INFP does not act from abstract duty. They act from specific feeling about specific people, or they do not act at all.
The inferior Te is the source of every breakdown in the series. He cannot build the structure around his interior life that would make the interior sustainable under external pressure. His retreating to the cockpit, his retreating to the hospital room, his retreating into the hedgehog's dilemma: all the inferior function failing to provide the external scaffold that would let the Fi dominant function without consuming itself. The hedgehog's dilemma is the INFP's most precise self-diagnosis: closeness hurts, distance is unbearable, and the inferior Te cannot build the framework that would make closeness survivable.
The End of Evangelion's final image - Shinji and Asuka on the beach, Shinji strangling and releasing her, her saying "disgusting" - is the INFP who finally chose reality over the interior world and found the exterior world responding with the one thing the Fi dominant structure could not process: genuine, specific, unmanaged contact. The interior was the protection. The reality is what was left when he gave it up.
Why Shinji Ikari Is INFP, Not ISFP or INFJ
Shinji is sometimes typed INTP - the analytical quality of his self-reflection, the apparent preference for understanding over action, the interior distance he maintains from his own situation. But INTP builds Ti frameworks and finds the architecture of systems interesting. Shinji does not find his situation intellectually interesting; he finds it emotionally overwhelming. His relationship to his own psychology is Fi-based: he is not analysing himself, he is experiencing himself, and the experience is primary and total and not framed by the analytical detachment that the Ti dominant produces.
The INFJ argument comes from the apparent visionary quality of the series - the sense that Shinji's arc is moving toward something, that the Instrumentality has a direction that he is positioned to determine. But INFJ's Ni provides the conviction. Shinji has no conviction; he has feeling and the absence of adequate structure for the feeling. The series is about what happens when the person who gets to determine the outcome of the Instrumentality is the person least equipped to determine anything because the inferior Te has never been adequate to the exterior requirements. He is not the INFJ hero of a vision. He is the INFP placed in a position that requires everything the type is worst at.
The clincher is his refusal to respond to the invasion in episode one. He sits outside the shelter. The Angel is destroying the city. He cannot move. That paralysis is the INFP inferior Te in its most complete failure: the exterior situation requires action, the Fi dominant is overwhelmed, and the inferior function cannot provide the bridge between the interior and the required external act. He moves because Rei is brought to him, injured, and the specific person overrides the general paralysis. He pilots for Rei, not for humanity. That is Fi, always. The specific person first.
The INFP Personality
Values-driven and deeply internal. INFPs hold firm ethical convictions that are entirely their own and rarely up for debate. They are not passive - their gentleness conceals a strong will about what matters.
