Heathcliff
Heathcliff is INFP consumed by obsession. His love for Cathy became the organising principle of his entire interior life - and then his entire revenge. He returns transformed, wealthy, and systematically destroys the families whose social contempt separated them, not from ideology but from the INFP interior wound that has been calcifying for twenty years. What makes him compelling rather than simply monstrous is that the injury was real: the love was real, the exclusion was real, and the INFP who has no adequate outlet for what they feel with that intensity will find an inadequate one. Wuthering Heights is the INFP interior life, uncontained.
Heathcliff and the INFP Mind
Heathcliff is INFP. For Heathcliff, that stack leads with Fi (Introverted Feeling) and is supported by Ne (Extraverted Intuition). Heathcliff's inner life is the primary reality. Fi (Introverted Feeling) is the dominant function - a deeply personal value system that Heathcliff uses to evaluate everything, quietly and constantly. It is not visible on the surface, which is why Heathcliff is often misread as passive or vague: the intensity is entirely internal. Ne (Extraverted Intuition) as the auxiliary generates the possibilities, connections, and alternative framings that allow Heathcliff to imagine how things could be rather than just how they are. The inferior Te (Extraverted Thinking) is the consistent weak point: execution, structure, external accountability, and the translation of the interior vision into concrete outcomes are where Heathcliff loses ground and where growth, when it comes, is most visible.

Heathcliff: What the INFP Profile Explains
Heathcliff's INFP profile is Brontë's most complete portrait of Fi consumed by obsession. His love for Cathy was never a strategic relationship, never a socially mediated attachment, never anything other than the INFP's most complete expression: the interior world organised around a single object with total conviction. He was a foundling without family, without class, without name - and Cathy was the first and only evidence that the interior life had somewhere to go. When Hindley's cruelty separated them and Cathy chose Edgar, the Fi dominant did not revise the object. It converted the love into its negative image: the revenge operation that consumed the rest of his life.
The inferior Te is the instrument of his revenge and the source of its inadequacy. He acquires Wuthering Heights, he acquires Thrushcross Grange, he arranges marriages to trap Hindley's and Edgar's children in the same degradation he was forced into - all inferior Te building the structure the dominant function requires to express what it cannot say. The architecture of his revenge is meticulous and effective and completely unable to produce the thing the Fi was always after: not the estates, not the humiliation of his enemies' children, but Cathy. Dead and gone, she remains the only real object in his world, which is the INFP's most devastating truth: the interior life, when it fixates, cannot be revised by anything the exterior world provides, including success.
His death - alone, in the room he opened to the moors, refusing food, looking at something nobody else can see - is the INFP arriving at the only resolution available: the interior vision, finally, without the obstacle of the exterior world he spent his life trying to make conform to it.
Why Heathcliff Is INFP, Not ISFP or INFJ
Heathcliff is sometimes typed INTJ - the systematic revenge, the long-range patience, the comprehensive destruction of his enemies' descendants. The INTJ argument is strongest in the middle sections of the novel, where his planning is evident and his execution is precise. But INTJ builds toward a vision of how things should be. Heathcliff builds toward a vision of what should have been - the restoration of something that cannot be restored. The revenge is not rational; it is Fi-driven, oriented toward a past that cannot be recovered rather than a future that can be constructed.
The ESTP argument comes from his physical dominance, his ability to read people's weaknesses and exploit them, his apparent present-tense engagement with each person he manipulates. But ESTP responds to present situations with present action. Heathcliff's entire life after Cathy's death is organised around a past event that present action cannot address. The Se he deploys against Hindley and Edgar and their children is instrumental - it serves the Fi objective - not primary.
The clincher is his response to Cathy's ghost. He opens the window. He keeps the window open. He stops eating. He sees something in the room that is not there. The inferior Te that built the revenge architecture has nothing left to build. The dominant Fi has finally found the only resolution it was capable of accepting: the interior world, at last, matches the exterior one. He dies toward her. That is the INFP function stack completing its final operation.
