Anne Frank
Anne Frank is INFP. Her diary is a record of an interior life of extraordinary richness maintained under conditions designed to extinguish it - two years in the Annex, in hiding, with discovery ending in death. Her relationship with Peter is the inferior Si's most complete expression in the annex: the specific person, encountered in the most constrained available present-tense configuration, accumulated by the inferior function with the completeness the function provides for the first available person who the dominant function's interior had not yet adequately processed. The relationship was real. The annex was the inferior Si's only available domain for accumulation. She loved him as fully as the configuration permitted.
"Despite everything, I believe that people are still good at heart." Written in the specific context of the specific historical moment, by the specific INFP whose Fi dominant has processed the specific evidence of what the exterior world is capable of and arrived at the specific conclusion the interior requires: the standard is real, the violation of the standard does not revise the standard, and the people who violated it are the measure of the violation rather than the measure of what people are. The Fi maintained the standard against the most extreme available evidence of its insufficiency as a description of the world. That maintenance is the type.
Why Anne Frank Is INFP, Not ISFP or INFJ
Anne is sometimes typed ENFP - the warmth, the apparent Ne-quality of her range, the vitality of the writing. But ENFP generates from the outside in - the Ne is expansive and energised by the world's responsiveness. The ISFP argument comes from the apparent present-tense quality of the diary entries, the specific sensory engagement. But ISFP is Fi-Se: the values are grounded in immediate physical engagement. Anne's most characteristic entries are Ne-generated: the alternative framings of the annex's specific configuration that make the configuration survivable, the specific comparisons to the outside world's parallel lives, the alternative version of herself that she might become if the war ends. The Ne is running. The Fi endorses what the Ne generates.
The clincher is her descriptions of who she wants to become. Across the diary, she generates multiple versions of the future Anne - journalist, writer, someone who matters - because the Ne is always generating the alternative to the present configuration and the Fi endorses each generation with the full investment the function provides. She was trapped in the annex. The Ne kept generating the versions of the world she would inhabit when the annex was past. The Fi believed in each version. That belief - the interior maintaining the generated alternative against the most extreme available present-tense evidence of its impossibility - is the INFP at its most complete.
