Rembrandt
Rembrandt is INFP. He arrived in Amsterdam in 1631 and became the city's leading portraitist almost immediately, married well, bought a large house and filled it with art he could not afford. His wife Saskia died in 1642, three of their four children had already died as infants, and by July 1656 he was insolvent and his collection was auctioned. He painted himself roughly a hundred times across forty years, and the sequence is the closest thing in art to a person watching themselves come apart.
Who Was Rembrandt?
Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn was born on 15 July 1606 in Leiden and died on 4 October 1669 in Amsterdam, aged sixty-three. He apprenticed with Jacob van Swanenburg for three years and Pieter Lastman for six months, opened a studio in Leiden in 1625, and moved to Amsterdam at the end of 1631, where he became the fashionable portraitist almost at once. He married Saskia van Uylenburgh in 1634, the cousin of his dealer, and became a citizen and a guild member the same year.
Between 1640 and 1642 he painted the militia group portrait known as The Night Watch, which broke every convention of the form by refusing to line the sitters up and instead staging them mid-action, half in shadow. Saskia died in 1642, probably of tuberculosis. Three of their children had already died in infancy; only Titus, born in 1641, survived.
What happened to Rembrandt's money?
He spent it. He collected obsessively - old master paintings, prints, weapons, shells, costumes - and lived far beyond what even a leading portraitist earned. In July 1656 he declared insolvency, and in November 1657 an auction disposed of 363 items from the collection; by February 1658 the house had been foreclosed and sold. In 1649 he had begun a relationship with Hendrickje Stoffels, formerly his maid, and in 1654 the Reformed Church summoned her, charged her with having committed the acts of a whore with Rembrandt, and barred her from communion. He was not charged with anything. His late paintings are looser, thicker and darker, moving further from fashion the poorer he got, and he died in relative poverty and was buried in a rented grave.
How INFP Processes the World
Every INFP operates through the same hierarchy of cognitive functions. Here is how that stack maps onto how Rembrandt actually thinks, decides, and acts.
Rembrandt: What the INFP Profile Explains
Rembrandt is dominant Fi, and the self-portraits are the argument. Roughly a hundred of them - over forty paintings, thirty-one etchings and a body of drawings - made across a whole working life for no client and no market. Nobody commissioned them. They exist because he was conducting an examination of himself that had to keep going, and the sequence records exactly what happened to him: the cocky young man in a plumed hat, the prosperous burgher, and then the ruined face at the end looking straight out with no defence left at all.
The auxiliary Ne is why he kept breaking the form. The Night Watch is not a better group portrait; it is a different proposition about what a group portrait could be, and the sitters were not universally delighted. He treated every commission as an opportunity to ask what else the picture might do, which is why the late work looks unfinished to contemporaries and modern to us.
Why did Rembrandt go bankrupt?
Inferior Te, applied to a large income over twenty years. He had no functioning relationship with money as a system - he bought what he wanted, borrowed against a house he could not service, and collected on a scale that made no commercial sense - and the collapse when it came was total. The tertiary Si is what deepened the work rather than the finances: the late paintings return continuously to accumulated material, the same biblical scenes, the same faces, the same self, thickened by everything that had happened since the last time he painted it.
Rembrandt: INFP Letter by Letter
A hundred self-portraits over forty years, made for nobody. The most sustained project of his life was an examination of his own face conducted in private and never commissioned by anyone.
He kept asking what a picture could be instead of what it was supposed to be - a militia portrait as a scene in motion, a biblical subject staged like something overheard. The late style moves further from fashion the more it costs him.
His subject is what a person is actually like, and he pursued it at the expense of flattery, finish and clients. The final self-portraits are the work of a man who has decided that an unsparing account is worth more than a comfortable one.
No plan, no financial structure, no career management. He bought what he wanted until the house was sold out from under him, and kept painting the way he had decided to paint while the market moved on without him.
Why Rembrandt Is INFP, Not ISFP or INFJ
ISFP is the most common alternative, and for a painter of that sensuous physical facility it is a fair guess. The difference is that his interest is not in the surface of the thing. He is painting interiority - what a person is like when nobody is performing - and he consistently sacrifices finish, likeness and flattery to get at it, which is Fi driving rather than Se.
INTP is occasionally suggested because of the technical experimentation. But the experiments are not systematic investigations; they are attempts to make a picture do something he wanted it to do emotionally, and he abandoned commercial convention for reasons he could not have defended to a client on any analytical grounds.
The INFP Personality
Values-driven and deeply internal. INFPs hold firm ethical convictions that are entirely their own and rarely up for debate. They are not passive - their gentleness conceals a strong will about what matters.
