Robinson Crusoe
Robinson Crusoe is ISTJ. Defoe published the novel in 1719 and gave English literature its first great procedural hero: a man who spends twenty-eight years alone on an island and responds by making a list. He builds a fortified enclosure, domesticates goats, learns to make pottery by failing at it repeatedly, keeps a journal, and draws up a ledger with the evils of his situation in one column and the goods in the other, on the grounds that this is how a rational person assesses a position.
Who Is Robinson Crusoe?
Robinson Crusoe is the narrator and protagonist of Daniel Defoe's novel, published in 1719 and frequently described as the first English novel. He is the son of a merchant in York who wants him to take up the law, and the book opens with him disregarding that advice and going to sea - an act he spends the rest of his life interpreting as the original sin from which everything else followed.
After several voyages, a period of enslavement in North Africa and a spell as a plantation owner in Brazil, he is shipwrecked off the coast of South America and is the only survivor. He is twenty-seven. He remains on the island for twenty-eight years, the first twenty-four of them entirely alone.
What does Crusoe actually do on the island?
He works, methodically, for decades. He salvages everything he can from the wreck across repeated trips before it breaks up, and inventories it. He builds a fortified camp with a palisade and a cave behind it. He raises a herd of goats from captured wild ones, plants barley and rice from spilled seed, and spends months failing to make usable pottery before succeeding. He keeps a journal until the ink runs out, marks the passing days on a post, and draws up a formal two-column account of the good and evil of his situation, concluding that the credit side is larger. Late in the period he rescues a captive from cannibals, names him Friday after the day of the week, and teaches him English and Christianity - a relationship the novel presents entirely on Crusoe's terms and which modern readers find considerably more troubling than Defoe did.

Crusoe is dominant Si, and the novel is essentially a demonstration of what that function does when everything else is stripped away. His response to catastrophe is not despair and not ingenuity in the improvisational sense; it is the systematic application of accumulated knowledge. He remembers how a fence is built, how grain is planted, how a pot is fired, and reproduces English domestic economy on a tropical island over twenty-eight years, one procedure at a time.
The auxiliary Te is the execution and the accounting. He measures, inventories, schedules and records. The two-column ledger of evils and goods is the purest illustration in English fiction of Te applied to an emotional situation: presented with despair, he formats it.
Why does Crusoe keep a journal nobody will read?
Because Si requires the record to exist. The marking of days on the post, the dating of events, the inventory of stores - none of it has any practical function for a man alone, and he does it because an unrecorded experience is, for this stack, close to an unreal one. The tertiary Fi is the religious conversion, which arrives during a fever and becomes the private frame he reinterprets his whole life through. The inferior Ne is the reason he was on the island at all: he could not imagine consequences, went to sea against every warning, and spent three decades understanding it as providence rather than as a decision.

Twenty-four years entirely alone, and the novel's texture barely changes for it. He narrates to himself, keeps his own counsel, and when Friday arrives the relationship is conducted largely on Crusoe's terms and inside Crusoe's frame.
The book is a catalogue of concrete detail: the number of trips to the wreck, the height of the palisade, the failures of the first kiln, the exact date. Nothing is abstract, and the pleasure of reading it is the pleasure of watching a thing actually get made.
Faced with total isolation he draws up a balance sheet. The response to despair is to itemise it in two columns and evaluate the result, which is either admirable or alarming and is certainly consistent.
He imposes structure on an empty island: a calendar, a routine, a fortified home, a farming year, a journal. Twenty-eight years of sustained, scheduled, self-directed work with nobody to require any of it.
Why Robinson Crusoe Is ISTJ, Not ISFJ or INTJ
ISTP is sometimes suggested because of the practical improvisation and the survival competence. The difference is method. A Ti-Se survivor solves each problem freshly as it presents; Crusoe reproduces remembered English practice - fences, crops, bread, pottery, a calendar - and his failures come from applying a known procedure to unfamiliar materials until it works.
INTJ is occasionally proposed because of the long project and the systematic mind. But he generates no new conception of anything. His achievement is the faithful reconstruction of a world he already knew, in a place that did not have it, which is Si rather than Ni.
