His death at Culloden is the J-disposition's most complete final statement. He fights not because victory is likely - no one present at Culloden believes the Jacobite army will win - but because the commitment designated fighting as the requirement and the commitment has not been revised. Jamie tells him to run. He does not run. The oath required him to be wherever Jamie was, in whatever fight Jamie was in, for as long as Jamie needed him. Culloden is that fight. He stays.
