Nina Simone
Nina Simone is INTJ. Born Eunice Waymon in Tryon, North Carolina in 1933, she was training to be the first Black woman concert pianist in America when the Curtis Institute rejected her, which she attributed to race and never got over. She took a bar job that required singing, invented a stage name so her mother would not find out, and spent the rest of her life making music nobody else could categorise. Curtis gave her an honorary degree two days before she died.
Who Was Nina Simone?
Eunice Kathleen Waymon was born on 21 February 1933 in Tryon, North Carolina, and died on 21 April 2003 at Carry-le-Rouet in France, aged seventy. She began playing piano at three or four, was recognised locally as a prodigy, and was educated toward a classical career - valedictorian of her high school, then a summer at Juilliard in 1950 studying under Carl Friedberg specifically to prepare for the Curtis Institute audition.
Curtis rejected her. She believed for the rest of her life that this was because she was Black; the institute disputed it. Whatever the truth, the rejection redirected everything: the concert career ended before it started, and she took a job at the Midtown Bar and Grill in Atlantic City in 1954 to pay for private lessons, where the owner told her she would have to sing as well as play. She took the name Nina Simone - Nina from a boyfriend, Simone from the actress Simone Signoret - so that her mother, who disapproved of secular music, would not find out what she was doing.
What made Nina Simone political?
1963. The murder of Medgar Evers and the bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham produced Mississippi Goddam, which she described as her first civil rights song, and which she wrote in about an hour. Radio stations in the South returned copies snapped in half. Four Women followed, about colourism and the categories imposed on Black women, and was banned by some stations for being offensive to the people it was defending. She believed the industry punished her for the political material, and after King's assassination in 1968 she left the United States in 1970, spending years in Barbados, Liberia, the Netherlands and finally France. She was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in the late 1980s while living in Nijmegen. Two days before her death, the Curtis Institute awarded her the honorary degree it had refused her fifty-three years earlier.

Simone is dominant Ni, and it is audible in the music before it is visible in the biography. Nobody could categorise her because she was not working inside a category; she had a conception and imposed it on whatever material was to hand.

Because tertiary Fi holds a wound absolutely and Te concluded there was nothing left to build here. The Curtis rejection, the industry's response to the political records, King's death and a marriage to a manager she later described as abusive accumulated into a settled verdict about the country, and she acted on it completely - not a tour abroad but an exit, for the remaining three decades of her life. The inferior Se is the hardest part of the record: an untreated and then poorly managed bipolar disorder, a body and a career neither of which anyone was looking after, and years in which the performances were unpredictable because nobody had put a structure around her.

Why Nina Simone Is INTJ, Not INFJ or ENTJ
INFP is the most common alternative, given the emotional intensity and the sense of a wounded interior. The difference is method. An Fi-dominant performer works outward from personal feeling; Simone constructed arrangements, imposed conceptions on material and controlled her performances with a precision that was frequently experienced as coldness by the people working with her.
ENFJ is occasionally suggested because of the command of an audience and the civil rights work.
