Prince
Prince is INTJ. Prince Rogers Nelson signed to Warner Bros in 1977 at nineteen and extracted creative control of three albums and his publishing rights, which is not a deal a teenager gets by accident. He then wrote, produced, arranged and played all twenty-seven instruments on his debut. Purple Rain held number one for twenty-four straight weeks and made him the first person to have the top album, single and film in America at once. He released thirty-nine albums and left a vault of unreleased material behind him.
Who Was Prince?
Prince Rogers Nelson was born on 7 June 1958 in Minneapolis and died on 21 April 2016 at Paisley Park in Chanhassen, of an accidental fentanyl overdose. He signed with Warner Bros in 1977, aged nineteen, and the terms are the first evidence of how he operated: creative control over three albums and retention of his publishing rights, which almost no debut artist of that era obtained. On For You, released in 1978, he wrote, produced, arranged and performed every part, playing all twenty-seven instruments himself.
Purple Rain in 1984 spent twenty-four consecutive weeks at number one on the Billboard 200, and for a period he held the number one album, the number one single and the number one film in the United States simultaneously, the first person ever to do it. Paisley Park, the studio complex he built in Chanhassen, was both his workplace and his home, and is now where he is buried.
Why did Prince change his name to a symbol?
Because he could not get out of a contract and could get out of a name. In 1993, in the middle of a dispute with Warner Bros over who controlled the release schedule and the masters of his own catalogue, he adopted an unpronounceable symbol as his stage name, which meant the label was contractually selling records by an artist it could no longer refer to. It was widely reported as eccentricity. It was a deliberate act of leverage against a company that owned the name Prince, and he spent years being called the Artist Formerly Known as Prince rather than concede the point. He released thirty-nine albums in his lifetime and recorded vastly more than he released, leaving a vault at Paisley Park whose contents are still being worked through.

Prince is dominant Ni expressed through an unusual medium, and the tell is that he heard finished records. The reason he played every instrument on For You is not that he was showing off; it is that the arrangement already existed complete in his head and teaching it to other musicians was slower than playing it himself. Ni delivers the whole thing at once, and his entire working method was built around getting it out before it degraded.
The auxiliary Te is the infrastructure, and it is the most underrated thing about him. He built his own studio complex, ran his own label, controlled his own masters where he could, and negotiated terms at nineteen that most artists never achieve. The name change is Te at its most inventive: presented with a contract he could not break, he attacked the one asset the contract did not cover.
Why was Prince so protective of his own music?
Tertiary Fi, and it is the reason the Warner fight was never really about money. His position was that the work was his, that the person who made it should decide when and whether it appeared, and he held that position at enormous commercial cost for years, including writing the word slave on his face in public. That is a private value defended absolutely, which is what Fi in third position does when it is finally provoked. The inferior Se is the harder part of the record: a man who lived almost entirely inside the work, whose relationship with his own body was subordinated to it, and whose death followed from pain he had been managing rather than addressing.

He worked alone through the night in a building he owned, gave almost no interviews, and constructed a public persona specifically so that the private one would not be required. Even at the height of Purple Rain he was famously unreachable.
He heard records finished before they existed and worked backwards to realise them. The genre boundaries he ignored - funk, rock, pop, gospel, new wave inside the same album - were never a fusion project, they were the by-product of hearing something that did not fit any of them.
The Warner campaign was fought as strategy, not tantrum: identify what the contract does not control, use it, accept the ridicule as a cost. He negotiated his first deal at nineteen on terms that told you exactly how he assessed the industry he was entering.
Thirty-nine finished albums, a studio complex, a label, a vault of completed recordings. Nothing about the output is loose - the material was recorded, mixed, sequenced and shelved, ready, which is the behaviour of someone who closes things rather than someone who explores them.
Why Prince Is INTJ, Not INFJ or ENTJ
ISFP is the most common alternative and by some distance the more usual typing, on the strength of the sensuality, the stagecraft and the sheer physical expressiveness of the performances. But the performances were designed, rehearsed to exhaustion and executed to a plan he had fixed in advance, and his career decisions were consistently strategic rather than expressive. The aesthetic is Se-flavoured and it sits fourth, serving a vision rather than generating one.
ENTP is occasionally suggested because of the range and the constant output. The difference is convergence. An Ne-dominant musician would explore in all directions and finish little; Prince produced a continuous stream of completed, released, fully realised records aimed at a single artistic conception he had held since he was a teenager, and built an institution to protect it.
