Humbert Humbert is INTJ. Nabokov's Lolita, published by Olympia Press in Paris in 1955 and in the United States in 1958, is narrated by a man who abuses a twelve-year-old child for years and writes it up in some of the most beautiful prose in English. That is the trap and it is deliberate. Nabokov called him a vain and cruel wretch who manages to appear touching. The reason his account is so persuasive is that a formidable intelligence has been turned entirely toward self-justification.
Who Is Humbert Humbert?
Humbert Humbert is the pseudonymous narrator of Vladimir Nabokov's Lolita, rejected by American publishers and issued by Olympia Press in Paris in September 1955 before Putnam brought it out in the United States in August 1958, where it sold a hundred thousand copies in three weeks. He is a French literature professor, and the book is presented as his prison memoir, framed by a foreword from a fictional editor, John Ray Jr, who tells us at the outset that the author is dead.
What he does is not ambiguous. He becomes obsessed with Dolores Haze, aged twelve, rents a room from her mother Charlotte in order to be near her, and marries Charlotte to secure access. Charlotte discovers his diary and is killed by a car; he collects Dolores from summer camp with a lie about her mother being in hospital, and then keeps her for years, moving her constantly across the country, bribing her for sexual compliance and controlling every part of her life.
Why is Lolita written the way it is?
Because the prose is the argument, and Nabokov built it as a test the reader can fail. Critics are close to unanimous that Humbert is an unreliable narrator; Wayne Booth's account of the book turns on how far his ethical position sits from his author's. Nabokov was explicit that Humbert is a vain and cruel wretch who manages to appear touching, and that the sense of immorality in the book is Humbert's rather than his own - Humbert cares, he said, and I do not. Clare Quilty, a playwright, eventually takes Dolores away; Humbert finds her years later at seventeen, married, pregnant and poor, shoots Quilty, is arrested and dies in prison. She dies in childbirth. The novel gives her almost no voice at all, which is the point being made about who is telling this.

Humbert is dominant Ni turned to the worst possible use. Ni produces a single organising conception and then reads all subsequent material through it, and his conception - the nymphet, the theory of a category of girl who is complicit in her own predation - is an elaborate fiction constructed to make an appetite into a destiny. He does not discover it; he builds it, and then experiences everything that follows as confirmation. That is what makes him frightening rather than merely repellent.
The auxiliary Te is the machinery of the abuse, and Nabokov is precise about it. Humbert plans. He selects the lodging, marries the mother, prepares the lie about the hospital, chooses motels and routes to prevent Dolores forming attachments, and manages her school and friendships to keep her isolated. This is not compulsion overwhelming a man. It is a sustained operation carried out by someone competent.
Why is Humbert's narration so persuasive?
Because tertiary Fi supplies genuine feeling and no functioning conscience, and the combination is what produces the famous beauty of the prose. He really does grieve, really does love in some deformed sense, and the sincerity of it is what allows the reader to slide past what is being described. The reader who is moved has been manoeuvred, which is the effect Nabokov engineered. The inferior Se is the one place his construction fails: he cannot see Dolores, physically, as a person in a room having her own experience, and the few moments where her reality breaks through his account - the crying every night, the flat exhausted remarks he records without understanding - are the only reliable narration in the book.

The entire book is one man's interior, and no other consciousness is permitted to speak. Dolores exists in it only as he renders her, which is the formal device Nabokov uses to demonstrate exactly what has been done to her.
He invents a category - the nymphet - and then reads a real child through it, so that a theory constructed to excuse him becomes the only lens through which he can report anything. It is a total conception imposed on the world rather than drawn from it.
The abuse is planned and administered: the lodging, the marriage, the lie at the camp, the routes chosen to prevent her forming attachments. Nothing about it is impulsive, and the coldness of the logistics is the most damning thing in the novel.
He decides and executes across years without deviation, and even the ending is a plan carried out - the pursuit of Quilty, the confrontation, the shooting. The manuscript itself is a final structured argument submitted to a jury that does not exist.

INFP is sometimes suggested because the narration is so saturated with feeling. But Fi in the dominant position would produce a man measuring himself against a value, and Humbert's values are constructed after the fact to license what he has already decided to do.
