Bob Marley
Bob Marley is INFP. Two days before a free concert intended to calm political violence in Jamaica, gunmen came into his house and shot him in the chest and arm. He played the concert anyway. Eighteen months later, at the One Love Peace Concert, he brought the leaders of the two parties whose supporters were killing each other onto the stage and joined their hands above his head. He died in 1981 at thirty-six, of a melanoma that began under a toenail and which he had refused to have amputated.
Who Was Bob Marley?
Robert Nesta Marley was born on 6 February 1945 in Nine Mile, Saint Ann Parish, Jamaica, to a Black Jamaican mother and a white English father who was largely absent, and died in Miami on 11 May 1981, aged thirty-six. He grew up in Trench Town in Kingston and formed the Wailers with Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer in the early 1960s.
Catch a Fire in 1973 was the record that took reggae out of Jamaica, and Exodus in 1977 - written largely in London while he was recovering from the shooting - is the one Time magazine later named album of the century. He was a Rastafari, and the faith is not incidental to the music: the theology, the politics and the songs are the same material.
What happened at the Smile Jamaica concert?
On 3 December 1976, two days before a free concert Marley had agreed to play in an attempt to ease the political violence tearing Kingston apart, gunmen entered his house at 56 Hope Road and opened fire. He was hit in the chest and the arm; his wife Rita was shot in the head and survived; his manager Don Taylor was seriously wounded. He played the concert two days later, wounded, and when asked why, said that the people trying to make the world worse were not taking a day off, so how could he. In April 1978 he returned from exile for the One Love Peace Concert and brought Michael Manley and Edward Seaga - the leaders of the two warring parties - onto the stage and held their hands together above his head. In 1980 he played the independence celebrations for Zimbabwe. A melanoma had been found under a toenail in 1977; amputation was advised and he declined it, and the cancer eventually spread to his lungs and brain.

Marley is dominant Fi, and the decision to play while bleeding is the clearest statement of it available. There was no strategic case for going on stage two days after being shot in a country where the shooters were still at large. There was an internal position about what he was for, and it did not negotiate with the circumstances. Every major choice of his life has the same shape: arrived at privately, acted on completely, explained afterwards in a single sentence if at all.
The auxiliary Ne is the songwriting. His lyrics move by image and association - the burning fire, the exodus, the redemption song, the rain that falls on everyone - and their political content works precisely because it is not delivered as argument. Why did he refuse the amputation?
Because Fi held a religious conviction about the integrity of the body and would not trade it, and because tertiary Si had bound him to a set of practices he had committed to years before. It killed him at thirty-six. The inferior Te is the same story in a different register: an artist who built no apparatus around himself, whose business affairs were chaotic, and whose estate spent decades in litigation because the man had made no arrangements at all. He was operating on conviction, and conviction supplies no administration.

Why Bob Marley Is INFP, Not ISFP or INFJ
ENFP is the most common alternative, given the enormous public warmth and the stadiums. The difference is where the energy comes from. He was a private, watchful, somewhat withdrawn man off stage by most accounts, and the convictions were formed alone and in faith rather than generated in company.
INFJ is occasionally suggested because of the prophetic register and the peace concert. But he was not orienting toward an audience's needs; he was stating what he believed and letting it land where it landed, and the Peace Concert gesture was a personal act of witness rather than a piece of political stagecraft.
