Drake noticed, then Pitchfork, then the New York Times, and for a considerable period nobody knew who he was. The three 2011 mixtapes - House of Balloons in March, Thursday in August and Echoes of Silence in December - established the sound that a great deal of the following decade of R&B was built on. The eighties synth-pop of Blinding Lights is not a trend chase; it is a deliberate return to a specific remembered sonic world, deployed with real affection and real precision. INFPs reach for Si in that way - as nostalgia with an emotional charge attached rather than as pastiche. The inferior Te is visible in the opposite direction: the business scale of what he now runs, the tour records, the seven million dollars of his own money spent on a halftime show, all of it managed in a way that would have been unimaginable for the person who would not do an interview in 2011.
