Sting
Sting is INFJ. Gordon Sumner was born in Wallsend in 1951, the son of a milkman, and taught at a first school in Cramlington before music became viable. A bandleader in a jazz group named him after a black and yellow jumper that made him look like a wasp, and he never legally changed it. With The Police he wrote Every Breath You Take, which BMI has called the most-played song in radio history, then dissolved the biggest band in the world and hired jazz musicians. He has seventeen Grammys and a Colombian tree frog named after him.
Who Is Sting?
Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner was born on 2 October 1951 in Wallsend, Northumberland. His father was a milkman and his mother a hairdresser. He trained at Northern Counties College of Education between 1971 and 1974 and taught for two years at St Paul's First School in Cramlington before committing to music. The name came from Gordon Solomon, who led the Phoenix Jazzmen and observed that Sumner's black and yellow striped jumper made him look like a wasp. It stuck so completely that almost nobody uses the other one, and he has never legally changed it.
He formed The Police in January 1977 with Stewart Copeland and Andy Summers. Between 1978 and 1983 the band put five albums at number one in the UK and won six Grammys, finishing with Synchronicity, which was nominated for Album of the Year. Every Breath You Take, which he wrote, became the band's signature and by BMI's 2019 count the most-played song in the history of radio.
What did Sting do after The Police?
He ended the band at its commercial peak and did something almost nobody in that position does: he hired serious jazz players. The Dream of the Blue Turtles in 1985 was made with Branford Marsalis, Kenny Kirkland, Darryl Jones and Omar Hakim, and set the pattern for a solo career that has never stayed in one idiom for long. He has four Academy Award nominations for best song and won a Golden Globe for Until, from Kate and Leopold. With his wife Trudie Styler and the Kayapo leader Raoni Metuktire he founded the Rainforest Foundation Fund, work for which a Colombian tree frog, Dendropsophus stingi, was named after him. He holds seventeen Grammys, three Brit Awards, a CBE, the Kennedy Center Honors from 2014, the Ivor Novello Lifetime Achievement Award and the Polar Music Prize.

Why is Every Breath You Take so often misread?
Because it is an INFJ song about something ugly, delivered in the warmest possible register. Sting has said repeatedly that it is a stalker's song, written during the collapse of his first marriage, and it is played at weddings anyway. That gap is the Ni-Fe signature: the perception underneath is unsentimental and slightly cold, and the delivery is so attuned to the listener that most people never get past it. Ending The Police at their peak was a bet on a future nobody else could see, made against every available piece of evidence about what was working. His songwriting operates the same way, reaching for the image and the pattern rather than the literal account.
Almost everything he writes is addressed to someone. The songs are structured as approaches to another person - a lover, a listener, a stranger - and the activism follows the same shape, attaching to specific people and communities rather than to abstract policy.
He closes things. The band ended when he decided it should, the jazz record was made because he had decided that was next, and each phase of the career is a settled decision executed rather than an experiment left running. Very little about his path looks improvised.
Why Sting Is INFJ, Not INFP or INTJ
INTJ is the most common alternative, given the deliberate long-range career management and the willingness to do unpopular things. The difference is the auxiliary. INTJ implements through Te - systems, structures, organisations. Sting implements through people and through emotional address: he assembles bands, works in collaboration, and his output is consistently oriented toward how it will land on a listener rather than toward building anything.
ENFJ is occasionally suggested because of the activism and the sustained public presence. But the energy runs inward. He has spoken often about needing solitude to write, the career has long deliberate gaps in it, and the persona on stage is a controlled projection rather than an overflow. The vision comes first and the outward warmth serves it, which puts Ni ahead of Fe.
