Mufasa
Mufasa is ENFJ. He leads through vision and warmth, sees greatness in his son before Simba can see it himself, and his teaching about the circle of life is the ENFJ's characteristic gift: a comprehensive framework about how things work, delivered with the gentleness that makes truth receivable rather than threatening. His death is effective not just as plot but as type tragedy: the ENFJ who gave his life for the specific person he loved most, without hesitation, because the person is always the point.
Mufasa and the ENFJ Mind
Mufasa is ENFJ. The type is defined by a hierarchy of cognitive functions - not a checklist of traits but an ordered stack of mental processes that determines how someone perceives the world and how they make decisions. For Mufasa, that stack leads with Fe (Extraverted Feeling) and is supported by Ni (Introverted Intuition). Understanding that order explains not just what Mufasa does but why - and why they respond the way they do under pressure, in relationships, and at the turning points of their arc.
Mufasa reads the room before entering it. Fe (Extraverted Feeling) is the dominant function - a social and emotional attunement so precise that Mufasa often knows what people need before those people can articulate it themselves. Ni (Introverted Intuition) as the auxiliary means this attunement is strategic as well as empathic: Mufasa is working toward something specific, and the warmth is both genuine and directional. The result is a character who is inspiring, relationally perceptive, and capable of moving groups toward shared vision. The inferior Ti (Introverted Thinking) is the weak spot: Mufasa can be remarkably inconsistent in their internal logic, rationalising decisions that are primarily emotional, and becoming defensive when those rationalisations are closely examined.
What makes Mufasa a compelling example of ENFJ is not that they demonstrate every item on the type description, but that the function stack holds under pressure. In the moments that define their story in The Lion King - the decisions under stress, the failures of judgment, the rare moments of genuine growth - the pattern is consistent. The dominant function is what Mufasa reaches for first. The inferior function is what catches them off guard.

Mufasa: What the ENFJ Profile Explains
Mufasa's ENFJ profile is The Lion King's moral foundation: the Fe dominant that reads Simba - not just the current configuration but the complete picture of who Simba will need to become - and responds to what the future person requires as much as to the present child. His parenting is ENFJ at full capacity: the warmth of the Fe genuinely oriented toward the specific person, the Ni synthesising the long-range picture of what that person's development requires, and the two functions operating simultaneously to produce the specific lesson at the specific moment when Simba's development can receive it.
The stars are the Ni synthesis delivered as accessible wisdom: the people who loved you are present in the patterns that persist over time, the synthesis is correct, the specific person you are talking to needs to hear the synthesis in a form the Fe has determined will reach them. He does not teach Simba about the Circle of Life as philosophy. He teaches it as the specific framework Simba's specific psychology requires to navigate the specific challenges the Ni has already identified are coming. The teaching is always pre-calibrated to the recipient.
His death and return as ghost/vision are the ENFJ's most complete narrative expression: the Fe cannot simply end when the body ends, because the Fe's investment in the specific person's development is not subject to the temporal constraint. He returns because Simba needs him to return, which is the Fe dominant's most defining quality: the function oriented toward the specific person's wellbeing does not stop orienting when the most obvious instrument for doing so is removed.
Why Mufasa Is ENFJ, Not INFJ or ENFP
Mufasa is sometimes typed ISTJ - the duty, the institutional loyalty, the apparent conservatism of the Circle of Life as a concept. But ISTJ's Si is dominant: it operates from accumulated precedent. Mufasa's parenting is Ni-generated: he synthesises what Simba will need before Simba can articulate it. He does not teach Simba what he was taught; he teaches Simba what the Ni has synthesised Simba's specific development requires. That forward-looking synthesis, oriented toward the specific person, is ENFJ, not ISTJ.
The INFJ argument comes from the apparent private depth, the sense of a larger vision he is serving. But INFJ's vision is held in relation to people through Fe. Mufasa's vision is the specific people. The Circle of Life, the Pride Lands, the responsibility of kingship - all of it is held in relation to what those structures mean for the specific beings who inhabit them. The Fe is primary. The vision is what the Fe requires for its operation to be coherent across time.
The clincher is his confrontation with Scar before the death. He does not position the confrontation as a political conflict or a strategic battle. He positions it as a family matter - specifically, as a matter of what Simba's father will not permit to happen to Simba's father. The Fe is the framing. The Ni has synthesised where the confrontation was always going. The ENFJ at the moment of maximum threat responds relationally, not institutionally. That relational framing - father, son, brother, family - is the type's most honest statement of what it is actually protecting.

Warm, purposeful, and naturally attuned to what others need to become. ENFJs lead through relationship. They rarely operate without a vision of the collective good they are working toward.
