M. Gustave
M. Gustave is ENFJ. Ralph Fiennes plays the concierge of the Grand Budapest Hotel in Wes Anderson's 2014 film as a man who has organised his entire self around the maintenance of civility in a place where it is about to stop existing. He sleeps with the elderly wealthy guests, recites poetry at inappropriate moments, and takes a penniless refugee lobby boy as his protégé. He is killed by fascist soldiers on a train, for standing between them and that boy.
Who Is M. Gustave?
Monsieur Gustave H. is the central character of Wes Anderson's The Grand Budapest Hotel, released in 2014 and played by Ralph Fiennes in what is generally regarded as the performance of his career. He is the concierge of a grand hotel in the fictional Republic of Zubrowka, somewhere in a central Europe that is unmistakably about to be overrun, in the years between the wars.
His professional method is total. He knows every guest's preferences, manages every crisis invisibly, drenches himself in a cologne called L'Air de Panache, and conducts affairs with the elderly, wealthy, insecure women who stay at the hotel - which the film treats as neither sordid nor comic but as an extension of the same service. One of them, Madame D., dies and leaves him a priceless painting, and her family frame him for her murder.
What happens to M. Gustave?
He takes Zero Moustafa, an immigrant lobby boy with no family and no papers, as his protégé, and the relationship becomes the actual subject of the film. He escapes prison, recovers the painting, clears himself, and inherits the hotel. Then, on a train, soldiers demand Zero's papers, and Gustave - who has already been dragged off a train once for the same reason - intervenes on his behalf. They take him outside and shoot him. Zero's narration, decades later, contains the film's thesis: that Gustave's world had vanished long before he entered it, but that he sustained the illusion with a marvellous grace.

Gustave is dominant Fe, and the concierge role is that function given a job description. His entire competence is the reading and management of other people's emotional states - anticipating what a guest needs before they know, defusing crises, supplying reassurance, remembering everything about everyone. It is not obsequiousness. He genuinely believes that maintaining these standards is what keeps a civilisation from becoming something else, and the film agrees with him.
The auxiliary Ni is why the character has weight rather than being merely a comic creation. He can see what is coming. The poetry, the manners and the rituals are performed with increasing desperation across the film precisely because he understands they are the last of something, and the tension between his fastidiousness and the historical situation is the entire joke and the entire tragedy.
Why does Gustave die the way he does?
Because Fe attaches to a specific person and will spend everything on them, and because he had done it once before and survived. The first train scene establishes exactly what these soldiers are; the second one is him stepping in front of them for Zero with full knowledge. Tertiary Se is the physical courage and the theatrical presence that make it possible, and inferior Ti is the reason it is not a calculation - he does not weigh the odds, he responds to what is happening to somebody he loves. Zero's assessment is that he was one of them, meaning the vanished world, and that he sustained the illusion beautifully. It is the kindest possible obituary and it is also accurate.
M. Gustave: ENFJ Letter by Letter
He runs a hotel by being everywhere in it, speaking to everyone, and holding an entire staff and clientele in his head simultaneously. There is no private Gustave in the film, and the one glimpse of him alone is in a prison cell.
He knows the world he is maintaining has already gone. The manners and the poetry become more insistent as the film darkens because he is performing a vanished thing deliberately rather than failing to notice its absence.
Everything he does is calibrated to another person - the guest, the staff, the boy. He takes in a refugee with no papers, trains him, leaves him everything, and finally steps in front of soldiers for him.
The hotel runs on his standards, applied without exception, and he is unwavering about them under conditions that make them absurd. He decided what he was going to be a long time ago and did not adjust it for the century.
Why M. Gustave Is ENFJ, Not INFJ or ENFP
ENFP is sometimes suggested because of the flamboyance and the verbal invention. The difference is the auxiliary. Ne with Fi produces someone generating possibilities from a private value; Gustave's entire apparatus is directed at other people's states - what a guest needs, what a room requires, what a frightened boy should be told - which is Fe leading.
ESFJ is occasionally proposed because of the service and the social precision. But he is not maintaining an established order; he is sustaining one that has already ended, knowingly, because he has judged that the alternative is worse. That is a vision rather than a convention.
