Edward Elric's ENTP profile is Fullmetal Alchemist's central energy: the mind that cannot stop generating angles, the mouth that cannot stop arguing with every authority that presents itself, the body that cannot stop acting on whatever the Ne-Ti combination has just determined is the correct solution to the current problem. Alchemy is the perfect ENTP domain: a system built on the principle that every substance can be transformed into every other substance if you understand the underlying equivalence - which is the Ne-Ti combination's fundamental relationship to reality, rendered as physics.
The inferior Si is Al, and also his mother. The thing that started everything - the human transmutation, the toll, the loss of his arm and his brother's body - is the ENTP's inferior function making the catastrophic move that the dominant stack failed to prevent: the Si attachment to the specific person who was gone, so total that it overrode every Ti framework about what transmutation actually costs. He knew the theory. He knew what human transmutation produced. The inferior function ran the operation anyway.
His arc across the series is the ENTP building a Ti framework rigorous enough to account for what the inferior Si requires: get Al's body back, without cutting corners, without another equivalence error. The Ne keeps generating solutions. The Ti keeps evaluating them. The inferior Si keeps providing the motivation that the dominant stack would otherwise replace with the next interesting problem. He does not stop because the inferior function will not permit stopping. The ENTP who has found the problem that the inferior Si makes impossible to abandon has found the problem that makes everything else available to the dominant stack.
Why Edward Elric Is ENTP, Not ENFP or INTJ
Ed is sometimes typed ESTJ - the apparent rule-enforcement, the professional standards, the military rank he holds and uses with unusual seriousness for a teenager. But ESTJ operates from accumulated precedent. Ed violates every procedural norm he encounters - he challenges superior officers, ignores Central's protocols, bypasses official channels repeatedly - because the Ne-Ti combination has assessed the current situation and generated a better solution than the institutional procedure provides. He is not defying the rules for its own sake; he is implementing what the Ti has determined is correct, regardless of what the rules say.
The INTJ argument comes from his long-range plan, the patience of the search for the philosopher's stone. But INTJ's Ni synthesises the plan into a convergent vision and executes it with Te. Ed generates approaches, tests them, abandons them when they fail, and generates new ones. The search is iterative, not convergent. He does not know where the stone is or how to get it; he knows the principle of equivalent exchange and he is applying it to every available possibility until one of them works. That iterative generation is Ne-Ti, not Ni-Te.
The clincher is his response to the Truth. He stands before the gate having transmuted his way to the final exchange, and he offers his alchemy - his most complete access to the dominant function - in exchange for Al's body. The ENTP who gives up the Ne-Ti combination's primary instrument to recover the inferior function's primary object: that is the character completing its most honest arc. The alchemy was always in service of the inferior Si. When the inferior Si finally got what it needed, the alchemy was expendable. He smiles. That is the type, correctly resolved.
