Dougal makes decisions from assessment rather than feeling. When he exposes Jamie's scars on the road, the inferior Fi has registered that Jamie objects. These are not positions he arrived at through deliberation and holds tentatively - they are the foundational entries in the Si library, established early, maintained across everything the series puts him through. When specific situations produce pressure to revise the foundational commitments - when the Jacobite cause looks unwinnable, when Colum's decisions seem wrong, when the specific people he is managing require things the commitments do not accommodate - the commitments hold and the situations are managed within them.
Culloden is the J-disposition's most complete expression. The cause is lost before the battle begins. Every Te assessment of the specific military situation says the Jacobite army cannot win. Dougal fights anyway, because the J-disposition does not revise foundational commitments on the basis of unfavourable odds. The commitment was made. The commitment holds. The Si library has no entry for the kind of survival that involves walking away from a battle for the cause while men are still dying in it. He fights and he dies on the field. Why Dougal MacKenzie Is ESTJ, Not ENTJ or ISTJ
