Don Quixote is ENFP. He does not maintain the vision privately. He delivers it with the complete conviction of someone for whom the interior and the exterior have never been fully separate. Every specific present-tense person is a potential participant in the specific adventure the specific present moment contains.
His relationship with Sancho is the Extravert's most complete portrait of the specific partnership the function hierarchy requires for the generation to be most completely itself: Sancho provides the specific present-tense resistance that the Ne requires to confirm that the generation is producing something worth the speed it is traveling at. Without Sancho the generation runs unchecked. With Sancho the generation is in dialogue with what the generation is departing from. The dialogue is the novel's most complete comedy. The comedy is the most honest available portrait of the ENFP at full operation.
He reads what every situation implies about what it could be rather than what it is. The Ne is always running the pattern of the available present-tense configuration against the library of the available chivalric romance, the specific accumulated record of what the specific Si library holds as the primary available world, and the pattern always implies something more interesting than the literal surface. He is not wrong about the possibility. He is constitutively iNtuitive: the pattern's implications are more primary to him than the literal surface the pattern is instantiated in. The windmills contain giants. The giant is the implication. He inhabits the implication.
His vision of Dulcinea is the Ni synthesis at its most complete idealistic expression: he synthesised the most perfect available woman from the specific Aldonza Lorenzo and the accumulated ideal, and the synthesis became more real to him than the person it was synthesised from. He did not love Aldonza. He loved Dulcinea. Dulcinea was the synthesis. The synthesis was complete. The Ni always synthesises something more complete than the available literal material provides. He lived inside the synthesis. The synthesis was where the chivalric world was real.
He is genuinely chivalrous. Not performing chivalry, constitutively chivalrous: the Fi has designated the code of chivalry as the primary available framework for what action requires and the designation is complete and non-negotiable. He does not calculate the cost-benefit of charging the windmill before charging it. The Fi has designated the people behind him as primary and the giant as the specific threat to the primary people and the function hierarchy does not produce the calculation about whether the giant might be a windmill before the charge has begun. He charges completely. The charging is what the primary designation requires. He provides it.
His deathbed recantation is the Fi's most complete and most devastating portrait: the Si library finally updates its most foundational entry, Alonso Quijano the Good returns from the specific Don Quijote the specific reading had produced, and the specific vision of what he had been is visible as the specific vision it was. He was not wrong to have been Don Quijote. The vision was real. The chivalry was genuine. The specific world it was applied to was the available world. He inhabited the available world with the completeness of someone for whom the vision is always more real than the surface. He was Don Quijote. He was also Alonso. The Fi held both.
He set out before he had adequate armour, a squire, provisions, or a destination. The P-disposition does not build the complete preparation before beginning. It begins from what the present moment provides and builds from what the journey produces. He needed a squire, he found Sancho. He needed a beloved, he created Dulcinea. He needed giants, the present moment produced windmills. The P-disposition generates from what is available. The available world kept producing the raw material the generation required. He generated from all of it.
Until death it is all life. The P-disposition's most complete philosophical statement about its relationship to the specific future: the future is the next adventure, and the next adventure will offer what it offers, and the function hierarchy will respond to what it offers, and this is sufficient. He did not plan past the next adventure. The next adventure was always there. He went to meet it. The windmills were always there. He rode at them. They were always giants until they stopped being giants. They were giants to the very end.
Why Don Quixote Is ENFP, Not ENTP or INFP
Don Quixote is sometimes typed as ENTP or INFP. The confusion is understandable: Don Quixote can seem as argument-driven as an ENTP or as values-anchored as an INFP. But surface-level trait-matching is how typing errors accumulate. The cognitive function stack is what resolves them.
