BoJack Horseman

BoJack cannot be alone without the interior turning catastrophic. When the exterior engagement is present, the party, the cast, the talk show appearance, the specific human interaction that the Ne-Fi combination uses as its primary processing medium, the exterior absorbs enough of the interior load that the loop stays external. When the exterior engagement disappears, when the show ends, when Todd leaves, when everyone has finally left, the loop turns inward, and the inward loop in BoJack is what makes the swimming pool scene possible. He is not being destroyed by the exterior world. He is being destroyed by the interior world that the exterior world was keeping at bay. The Extravert's most dangerous failure mode is when the exterior world stops being available.

His relationship with the audience is also characteristically ENFP: he needs the specific confirmation that the specific people actually see him and find what they see acceptable. Not performing well, he has performed well his entire career. Being seen, specifically, as what he actually is underneath the performance. This is what Diane provides and what he cannot find elsewhere: the specific quality of someone who sees him accurately and continues to engage. He drives every person who provides this out of his life eventually, because the Ne generates the ways to destroy each specific relationship and the Fi endorses the destruction before the inferior Si can accumulate what the destruction is costing.

He sees what everyone is doing from the inside. The Hollywoo industry, the specific quality of each person's self-deception, the specific way each relationship is performing something other than what it claims to be, he perceives all of it with the accuracy the Ne provides when it is reading the patterns people are enacting rather than the presentations they are making. This is what makes him good at the work when he is able to do the work: the Ne reads what the character requires at the pattern level, beneath the surface behaviour, and the performance follows from the reading rather than from the technical execution of what the script specifies. His best acting is perceptive. His worst behaviour is also perceptive. He sees what people are doing and uses what he sees.

The depression is also iNtuitive in structure: the Ne keeps generating the framework for what his life is, what the pattern of the choices he has made implies about who he is and where things are heading, and the synthesis produces a verdict the inferior Si cannot revise because the inferior Si has not accumulated adequate alternative evidence. He sees the pattern. The pattern says the same thing every time. The pattern is what the show is about. He sees it clearly. Seeing it clearly does not help. Seeing it clearly is the iNtuitive function's most complete and least comforting quality.

He cares about people in the specific, overwhelming way that the Fi dominant cares about specific people when the function is running without adequate structural support. He cares about Todd. He cares about Diane. He cared about Sarah Lynn in a way that the function did not adequately protect against what caring about Sarah Lynn in his specific configuration would eventually require. The Fi's most complete statement in the series is also its most devastating: he cares about her enough to enable her relapse and not enough to stop it and the caring and the failure are the same thing, produced by the same function, inseparable because the function cannot simultaneously care about the specific person and maintain the adequate external framework that the specific person's specific vulnerability required.

His most honest speech, about how he needs people to tell him that he is a good person because he needs to hear it from the outside because he cannot generate it from the inside, is the Fi dominant at its most naked. The Fi requires external confirmation that its most important designations are real and valued. He cannot manufacture the confirmation himself. He needs specific people to provide it. When the specific people are gone, the confirmation is gone, and the loop between the Fi's designations and the exterior world's responses closes in the most dangerous available direction.

He does not have a plan. He has had several career plans over six seasons, each of which has collapsed not from external opposition but from the P-disposition's constitutive inability to maintain the structure the plan requires when the present moment produces something more interesting or more immediate or more destructive than the plan. The Secretariat filming opportunity, the Hollywoo sign, the teaching position at Wesleyan, each arrives as a present-moment possibility the Ne finds compelling and each ends when the present moment produces something that makes the plan impossible to continue. He is not self-sabotaging in the clinical sense. He is being the P-disposition without the structural support the P-disposition requires to build anything that lasts.

The finale, the roof, Diane not answering, the specific silence after the question "what do we do now?", is the P-disposition's most honest statement about what happens when the accumulated present moments have finally produced a configuration the function does not have an adequate response to. The Ne has been generating from available material for six seasons. The available material has finally run out. There is no new angle on the present moment. There is only the present moment as it is, with the specific person not answering, and the question of what comes next for a P-disposition that has always answered that question from what the present moment offered. He survives. The next present moment arrives. He answers the question from what that present moment offers. It is enough. Barely.
