Anton Chigurh
Anton Chigurh is INTJ without the last remaining ethical constraint. His framework is a philosophy of fate: everything that happens is the consequence of prior causes, including the outcome of a coin toss, and his role is to be the instrument that makes those consequences arrive. His coin flips are not sadism; they are theology - he is genuinely offering something, which is the chance for the person's own choices to save them. "Call it." His consistency is total: he kills the people he said he would kill and does not kill the people his code exempts, including Carla Jean's mother and, in one reading, Moss's wife. His coin flips are not random; they are the Ni synthesis made into a ritual - the acknowledgment that the framework has already determined the outcome, and the coin is simply the ceremony by which the person in front of him is permitted to witness the determination. He already knows. He has already decided. The coin is a gift, in the framework's terms: the chance to participate in what has already been decided.
His contract ethic - "if the rule you followed brought you to this, of what use was the rule?" - is the INTJ's most honest self-description: the Ni synthesis produces the rule, the Te implements it without exception, and the consistency of the implementation is the framework's primary value. He does not break his contracts because the Ni synthesis requires that the framework be internally consistent above all other considerations. An internally inconsistent framework is not a framework; it is just preference, and preference is what the people around him have instead of a synthesis.
His survival at the end - hit by a car, arm broken, bribing children not to talk - is the Ni synthesis encountering the inferior Se and finding it insufficient to model a random car accident. He had built the most comprehensive available framework for human behaviour and been defeated by physics. The irony is precise: the framework that eliminated every human variable that could threaten it could not model the non-human variable. The car was not running a framework.
Why Anton Chigurh Is INTJ, Not INFJ or ENTJ
Chigurh is sometimes typed ENTJ - the command, the comprehensive management of the operation, the institutional authority he projects. But ENTJ builds outward and needs the institution. Chigurh needs nothing. He is the Ni synthesis operating without any institutional container, which is more accurate to the INTJ at its purest expression: the Te implementing the framework in absolute independence. ENTJ cannot sustain this level of institutional independence because the Te dominant needs an organisation to run. Chigurh's Te runs itself.
The ISTP argument comes from the physical competence, the tactical precision, the apparent present-tense engagement with each kill. But ISTP responds to what is present. Chigurh has already determined every relevant outcome before he enters the room. The cattle gun, the coin, the specific sequence of each encounter: all Ni-determined in advance, Te-implemented with precision. He does not read the situation; he arrives having already read every available version of the situation and selected the optimal response.
The clincher is his conversation with Carla Jean. She refuses the coin flip. She says the coin has no say. He tells her the coin has called it for everything in her life without her knowing. That is the Ni synthesis delivered directly: the pattern was always there, the determination was always made, and the coin is simply the one moment where the determination is made visible. He kills her off-screen. He looks at his boots for blood. The framework required the outcome. The inferior Se checks whether the implementation was clean. Both operations complete on schedule.
