The inferior Si is the spiral. Once she leaves Karenin and enters the relationship with Vronsky, the inferior function - which should be providing the stable foundation of a new life - instead begins accumulating fears. Vronsky will leave. He has already left, in some Ne-generated timeline. The accumulated evidence of every small coldness, every moment of distraction, every society event she cannot attend: the inferior Si converting everything into evidence for the worst possible alternative. Her jealousy is not irrational; it is the ENFP inferior function finally running at full volume without any of the optimism the Ne had previously been generating to balance it.
The train is the inferior Si completing its logic: if the accumulated evidence leads only to loss, the inferior function that cannot build a foundation can at least end the accumulation. It is the ENFP's most catastrophic failure mode, and Tolstoy understood it with a precision that the nineteenth century's official moral framework could not have supplied.
Why Anna Karenina Is ENFP, Not ENTP or INFP
Anna is sometimes typed ESFP - the warmth, the physical magnetism, the complete present-tense aliveness of her scenes with Vronsky. But ESFP is Se dominant: it inhabits the present with less self-consciousness and less internal narrative than Anna demonstrates. The train is the Se reality that the Ne-generated alternative has made unbearable. The ENFP whose Ne has produced only loss, and whose inferior Si cannot build anything that would contain the accumulation: the train resolves the situation the function stack can no longer manage.
