The Stranger is the INFP writing the ISTP - Meursault is the type that processes the Absurd without the Fi's requirements that make the Absurd painful. Camus could write Meursault because the INFP understands what the Fi dominant's absence would look like: a person entirely adequate to the present-tense configuration without the interior need for meaning that makes the Absurd a problem rather than a fact. He wrote the most complete available portrait of the type he was not from the inside of the type he was.
His break with Sartre is the Fi dominant's most complete statement about what intellectual honesty requires when the Ne has generated a political alternative the Fi cannot endorse: communism's specific costs to specific people are the kind of evidence the Fi dominant cannot set aside for the sake of the intellectual framework's coherence. He broke with Sartre because the Fi had the specific accounting and could not revise it to produce the INFP's most specific failure mode - the subordination of the interior standard to the exterior system.
Why Albert Camus Is INFP, Not ISFP or INFJ
Camus is sometimes typed INTP - the philosophical precision, the analytical framework of The Myth of Sisyphus, the apparent detachment. But INTP builds Ti frameworks and finds the construction intrinsically interesting. Camus builds Fi assessments and uses the Ne to find the most complete available expression for what the interior requires. The Absurd is not a Ti framework for understanding existence. It is the Fi dominant's most complete available statement about what the gap between what the interior requires and what the universe provides feels like from inside the type that feels it most completely.
The ENFP argument comes from his warmth, the apparent relational quality of his engagement. But ENFP generates possibilities from the outside in. Camus generates from the inside out: the Fi determines what requires expression, the Ne finds the form. The direction is interior-first. The warmth is the Fi oriented toward specific people, not the Ne generating new possibilities for connection.
The clincher is his Nobel Prize speech: "The writer's function is not without difficult duties. By definition, he cannot serve today those who make history; he must serve those who are subject to it." That is the INFP's most complete statement about what the Fi dominant requires of the person who has found its form: the interior standard is specifically oriented toward the specific people who are subject to what power produces, not toward the people who produce it. The Fi has the accounting. The Ne has the form. The writer serves the specific people the Fi has designated.
