Both are warm and people-caring. One receives a private vision and carries it outward. The other reads the community's needs and serves them faithfully.
INFJs and ESFJs both carry Extroverted Feeling in their function stacks and both can appear warm, organized, and genuinely oriented toward the wellbeing of people. Both take their relational responsibilities seriously. Both can be described, by people who know them, as caring and attuned. The confusion between them is real, particularly in warm INFJs and reflective ESFJs where the caring quality dominates the first impression on both sides.
INFJs lead with Introverted Intuition, which synthesizes information into private forward-looking patterns and visions of what is true and where things are heading. Their Fe is auxiliary: it carries the Ni synthesis outward toward people and gives it human application. The care is in service of the vision. ESFJs lead with Extroverted Feeling, which reads and manages the emotional landscape of people and communities. Their Si auxiliary grounds that care in accumulated proven custom and concrete precedent. The vision, to the extent there is one, is in service of the care. One type has a vision that they care for people toward. The other has care that does not primarily require a vision to justify it.
