The same four functions in a different order. Both care deeply; what differs is whether that care leads or follows.
ESFJs and ISFJs share all four cognitive functions. The difference is solely in the order, but that order determines what each type leads with and what they reach for second. Both are warm, caring, organized, and genuinely invested in the wellbeing of the people around them. Both value tradition, stability, and proven ways of doing things. Both take their commitments seriously. The confusion between them is common, and many people who are one type will recognize themselves strongly in descriptions of the other.
ESFJs lead with Extroverted Feeling (Fe), which makes the emotional health and relational harmony of their community their primary active domain. They reach for Introverted Sensing (Si) to ground their care in concrete precedent and established custom. ESFJs are community-directed first: they move outward toward people, they coordinate, they manage the social environment actively. ISFJs lead with Introverted Sensing (Si), which grounds them in concrete past experience and accumulated memory. They reach for Extroverted Feeling (Fe) to care for and attend to the people in their life. ISFJs are experience-grounded first: their care emerges from a deep internal store of what they have known and what they have valued. ESFJs broadcast their care; ISFJs channel it one-on-one.
