How to Tell Them Apart

Point 1

Ask whether they have a destination

ENTJs always have a destination. The Ni auxiliary produces a forward-facing strategic vision, and the dominant Te then organizes everything toward executing it. The destination may shift as new information arrives, but there is always a direction being built toward. ENTPs do not operate primarily through a fixed destination. Their dominant Ne is energized by the exploration itself: the next interesting question, the next unexplored angle, the next challenge to whatever is established.

Point 2

Look at structure and closure

ENTJs are J types for whom closure is structurally part of how they operate. A decision made is a direction committed; a project initiated is executed through. Ambiguity and open trajectories are loose ends. ENTPs are P types for whom open options are necessary for the exploration to continue. Premature closure forecloses something that might have been important.

Point 3

Consider follow-through

ENTJs complete what they begin. The Te dominant is oriented toward finished outcomes; leaving something incomplete is a structural failure. ENTPs complete what genuinely engages their Ne. When the interesting angle has been mapped and the novelty has been exhausted, the drive to deliver the remaining execution can wane.

Point 4

Watch their relationship with debate

ENTPs find debate genuinely energizing and will argue positions they do not hold simply to explore the territory. The intellectual friction is the point. ENTJs debate when it serves the strategic outcome: if the argument clarifies the path forward or refines the plan, it is useful. Debate without strategic purpose is less inherently interesting.

ENTJs plan strategically and execute the plan through organized direction. The plan is the architecture of what must be built.
