The same four functions in a different order, and that order changes everything about where each type begins and what drives them.
ENFJs and INFJs share all four cognitive functions. This is a rare overlap in the MBTI system and the reason the confusion between them is so persistent. Both are attuned to human emotion, both are idealistic about what people can become, and both can seem simultaneously warm and privately complex. From the outside, they can look like the same personality at different volume settings.
The difference is in which function leads, and the lead function shapes nearly everything else. INFJs lead with Introverted Intuition (Ni): they synthesize information into internal visions and reach outward through Extroverted Feeling (Fe) as a secondary move. The INFJ's deepest orientation is internal. People are the channel through which an inner vision finds expression. ENFJs lead with Extroverted Feeling (Fe): they actively read and shape the emotional landscape of groups and reach inward through Ni as a secondary move. The ENFJ's deepest orientation is external. Their vision is in service of people rather than the other way around. One type counsels individuals from a place of internal sight. The other rallies people toward a vision from a place of interpersonal energy. The output can look similar. The source and the direction are not.
| ENFJ | INFJ | |
|---|---|---|
| Lead function | Extroverted Feeling (Fe) | Introverted Intuition (Ni) |
| Orientation | Interpersonal; people are the primary domain | Internal; insight is primary, people are the channel |
| Energy source | Social connection and active engagement | Solitude and inward reflection |
| Decision speed | Fast; Fe reads and responds in real time | Slower; Ni synthesizes before Fe acts |
| Under stress | Fe-Se loop: approval-seeking, sensory overwhelm | Ni-Ti loop: analysis paralysis, overthinking |
| Natural role | Organizer, energizer, visible leader | Advisor, counselor, the presence behind the vision |
