Shrek is ISTP. He lives alone because people are annoying, solves problems directly and without unnecessary commentary, and is genuinely surprised when emotional connection becomes relevant to a situation he was trying to manage practically. His arc is the ISTP's most important developmental journey: the realisation that the swamp he built to protect himself from the world is also preventing him from receiving what the world occasionally offers. His love for Fiona is expressed through action - he fights for her, he rescues her, he shows up - because the ISTP's emotional vocabulary is physical and operational rather than verbal.

Shrek is ISTP. The type is defined by a hierarchy of cognitive functions - not a checklist of traits but an ordered stack of mental processes that determines how someone perceives the world and how they make decisions. Shrek's ISTP profile is the film's central premise: the Ti framework that has determined the correct configuration for the ogre's life (the swamp, alone, with adequate distance from the social world that has never received the Ti's function stack correctly) is suddenly populated with the inferior function's worst nightmare - specific people, requiring specific engagement, producing specific consequences the Ti framework had designated as unnecessary. He does not want to go on the quest. The Ti has assessed the current configuration as adequate. The inferior Fe is entirely offline for the first half of the film.
His relationship with Donkey is the inferior Fe's most honest portrait: the specific entity who cannot be removed from the swamp, who the Ti cannot categorise as a manageable variable, and who keeps providing the one input the inferior function actually needs - presence, persistence, the specific quality of being genuinely there regardless of the Ti's verdict about whether presence is required. Donkey is the inferior function's most complete avatar: the ESFP whose Se-Fi reads Shrek's ISTP function stack accurately and refuses to respond to it the way the function stack expects.
His love for Fiona is the inferior Fe finally running the operation: the specific person, the specific swamp adventure, the specific transformation that the function stack did not generate and cannot reverse. He did not plan to fall in love. The Ti had no programme for this configuration. The inferior function ran the operation while the dominant function was busy completing the quest, and when the dominant function came back online, the inferior function had changed the primary configuration. He goes to the wedding. The inferior Fe had already decided.
Why Shrek Is ISTP, Not ISTJ or ESTP
Shrek is sometimes typed ISTJ - the apparent rule-following, the resistance to change, the preference for the established configuration. But ISTJ's Si is dominant: it operates from accumulated precedent and maintains the established order. Shrek's resistance to the social world is Ti-based: the framework has assessed the social world as insufficiently worth the engagement cost, not as a violation of the accumulated standard. He is not maintaining the swamp because precedent requires it. He is maintaining it because the Ti has determined it is the correct available configuration.
The ISFP argument comes from the emotional depth, the apparent Fi quality of his love for Fiona. But ISFP is Fi dominant: the values are primary and generate the engagement. Shrek's emotional life is inferior Fe: it arrives late, is overwhelming when it arrives, and completely reorganises the Ti framework's primary configuration before the dominant function has processed that the reorganisation is occurring. The ISFP would have felt the love earlier. Shrek discovered it at the wedding.
The clincher is the swamp. He does not want to leave because the Ti framework has assessed the swamp as the optimal available configuration for the specific function stack he is running. The swamp provides adequate distance from the inferior function's most demanding inputs (specific people), adequate material for the Se auxiliary's engagement (the specific physical environment), and adequate freedom for the Ti to run its operations without the social world's requirements. He built the correct life for his type. The inferior function had different requirements. Both things are true.
