Rasputin
Rasputin is ENFJ. A Siberian peasant with no education and no clerical standing, he arrived in St Petersburg in the early 1900s as a wandering holy man and ended up the most influential private individual in the Russian Empire - because the Tsarevich Alexei had haemophilia, the condition was a state secret, and Rasputin appeared able to calm him when the doctors could not. He was murdered in December 1916 by aristocrats who believed removing him would save the monarchy. It fell fifteen months later.
Who Was Rasputin?
Grigori Yefimovich Rasputin was born around 1869 in Pokrovskoye, a village in Siberia, to a peasant family, and had no formal education. In his late twenties he underwent some kind of religious crisis, left for a period of wandering, and returned as a strannik - a self-appointed holy man of a type Russia produced regularly and the official church regarded with suspicion. He reached St Petersburg around 1903 and was introduced into aristocratic circles fascinated by mysticism.
What gave him access to the imperial family was a medical fact nobody outside it knew. The heir, Alexei, had haemophilia, and the condition was concealed as a matter of state security. Rasputin was able, repeatedly, to calm the boy during crises when the court physicians could not, and whatever the mechanism - the modern suggestion is that his insistence on rest and his refusal of aspirin, then being administered as a painkiller, may genuinely have helped - the effect on the Empress Alexandra was total.
Why was Rasputin murdered?
Because by 1916 he was widely believed to be directing appointments. Nicholas II had taken personal command at the front in 1915, leaving Alexandra effectively governing, and she consulted Rasputin - a drunken, sexually notorious peasant, in the view of everyone else - about ministers. The rumours about him and the Empress were almost certainly false and were politically fatal regardless. On the night of 30 December 1916 he was killed at the Moika Palace by a group including Prince Felix Yusupov and the Grand Duke Dmitri Pavlovich. The famous story of poison failing, then shooting, then drowning is largely embellishment from Yusupov's own memoir. The conspirators believed his removal would restore the dynasty's credibility; the February Revolution came fifteen months later.

Rasputin is dominant Fe, and it is the only thing that explains an illiterate peasant reaching the inner rooms of an empire. He read people with extraordinary accuracy and gave them precisely what they were missing - attention, absolution, a sense of being genuinely seen by someone with no stake in court politics. Aristocratic women who had spent their lives being flattered found a man who spoke to them bluntly, and the Empress found the only person in Russia who could reassure her about her son.
The auxiliary Ni is why he was more than a charming fraud. He appears to have genuinely believed in the peasant faith he preached, held a consistent and unfashionable position against the war, and made predictions about the fate of the dynasty that his defenders have made much of since. Whether any of it was prophecy is unanswerable; that he operated on a settled inner conviction rather than moment to moment is fairly clear from how little he adjusted his behaviour to survive.
Why couldn't Rasputin behave?
Because tertiary Se was completely ungoverned and inferior Ti gave him no framework to restrain it with. The drinking, the women, the public scenes - he made no serious attempt to conceal any of it, and the gap between the holy man and the conduct was the specific thing his enemies used. An Fe-dominant with a developed thinking function would have understood that the position required a performance and maintained one. He simply did not appear to grasp that his behaviour was a strategic problem, right up to the night four men decided to solve it for him.
Rasputin: ENFJ Letter by Letter
He worked rooms - salons, taverns, the imperial nursery - and was never alone by choice. His entire power was interpersonal, exercised face to face, and it evaporated the moment he was away from the people it acted on.
He operated on a settled inner conviction about faith, war and the fate of the dynasty rather than on the politics of the week, and he held positions - opposing the war above all - that were directly against his own interest at court.
He read what each person in front of him needed and supplied it with uncanny precision. A frightened mother, a bored aristocrat, a guilty penitent - his gift was knowing what would land, and it took him from a Siberian village to the Alexander Palace.
Once he had a position he did not move off it - about the war, about his own role, about the family he had attached himself to - and he did not adapt his conduct to the enormous political pressure it generated. The rigidity is what killed him.
Why Rasputin Is ENFJ, Not INFJ or ENFP
ENFP is sometimes suggested because of the wildness and the apparent spontaneity. The difference is what he was doing with people. An Ne-dominant would be generating ideas and possibilities; Rasputin's whole instrument was direct emotional engagement with individuals in a room, and his influence came entirely from what he did to the person in front of him.
INFJ is occasionally proposed because of the mysticism and the prophetic claims. But he was relentlessly outward and could not tolerate being alone - the taverns, the crowds of petitioners, the constant company. The convictions are real and they sit second, powering a man whose energy came entirely from other people.
