Peter Singer
Peter Singer is INTP. Born in Melbourne in 1946 to Austrian Jews who had fled Vienna in 1938 - three of his grandparents were murdered in the Holocaust - he published Animal Liberation in 1975 and gave the modern animal movement its founding argument and the word speciesism. He also follows utilitarian reasoning into conclusions about infanticide and disability that have produced organised protest and cancelled lectures for thirty-five years, and he has never adjusted them to make the objections go away.
Who Is Peter Singer?
Peter Albert David Singer was born on 6 July 1946 in Melbourne. His parents were Austrian Jews who left Vienna after the Anschluss in 1938; his paternal grandparents were taken to the Łódź ghetto and never heard from again, and his maternal grandfather, the psychoanalyst David Ernst Oppenheim, was murdered at Theresienstadt.
Animal Liberation, published in 1975, is the book that made him. Its argument is that the moral line between humans and other animals is arbitrary, that what matters ethically is the capacity to suffer rather than species membership, and that privileging humans on the basis of species is a prejudice structurally like racism - for which he popularised the term speciesism. It became the founding text of the modern animal rights movement.
Why is Peter Singer protested against?
Because he applies the same reasoning to newborn infants. His position, argued rather than asserted, is that personhood depends on characteristics that neonates do not yet possess, and that the killing of a newborn is therefore not morally equivalent to the killing of a person - a conclusion he extends into arguments about severely disabled infants that disability rights organisations regard as an existential attack. Lectures were shut down in Germany between 1989 and 1991, and his appointment as Ira W. DeCamp Professor of Bioethics at Princeton in 1999 drew organised protest and the withdrawal of donations by Steve Forbes. His other major line of work is the opposite in reputation: the 1972 essay Famine, Affluence and Morality, with its drowning child analogy, argues that people in wealthy countries are obliged to give substantially to relieve distant suffering, and it is one of the intellectual foundations of effective altruism. He founded The Life You Can Save, pledges a large share of his income, and gave away the entire million-dollar Berggruen Prize in 2021.

Singer is dominant Ti in its purest and least comfortable form. He takes a principle - that suffering matters and that arbitrary distinctions do not - and follows it wherever the logic goes, including to places that horrify people and cost him lecture halls, appointments and personal safety. He does not stop when a conclusion becomes socially unbearable, because the test he applies is whether the argument holds rather than whether it is tolerable.
The auxiliary Ne is why the same framework produced both halves of his reputation. Applied to animals it produced Animal Liberation; applied to distance and obligation it produced the drowning child; applied to the beginning of life it produced the positions that get him protested. It is one instrument pointed at successive domains, and the consistency is precisely what makes him so hard to dismiss.
Is Singer's philosophy inhumane?
The fairest account is that inferior Fe means he has never had much instinctive grasp of how his conclusions land on the people they are about. A man whose grandparents were murdered under a regime that classified some lives as unworthy has argued positions that disability advocates hear as the same classification, and there is no evidence he anticipated that. The tertiary Si is what keeps him honest in a different direction: he actually gives the money, has been vegetarian since 1971, and has arranged his own life around the arguments, which most philosophers do not.

He is an academic writer whose public presence is entirely a consequence of the arguments rather than a project of its own. His manner in the face of protest has been consistently quiet and undramatic, which unsettles people more than a fight would.
One principle applied across unrelated domains - factory farming, global poverty, the beginning and end of life, the ethics of giving. He keeps finding new territory for the same idea, which is why the body of work is so wide.
He follows valid reasoning into conclusions that have cost him lectures, appointments and considerable personal abuse, and does not soften them. Whether an argument is bearable is not a test he recognises.
He revised his own foundational commitment after four decades and reissues his central book with substantive changes. The framework is treated as open and improvable rather than as a position to be defended.
Why Peter Singer Is INTP, Not INTJ or INFP
INTJ is the most common alternative, given the influence and the sense of a coherent programme. The difference is closure. An Ni-Te ethicist builds toward a conclusion and constructs the institution to deliver it; Singer keeps reopening - he moved from preference utilitarianism to a hedonistic version in 2014, revises Practical Ethics across editions, and treats his own positions as provisional.
INFP is occasionally suggested because of the compassion the work evidently rests on. But he arrives at the compassion by argument rather than by conviction, and he will follow the argument to conclusions that feel monstrous. The reasoning leads and the feeling is a premise inside it.
